And yes if it was offered here I would get the google fiber with TV and the free Nexus 7 tablet.
EDIT: Just preregistered and was told they were currently concentrating on deploying in both KCs but had an email sign up for Google Fiber updates and to be notified when Google Fiber came to my area.
I think everyone should preregister who want it so they no where else they could go and possible put pressure on other ISPs to speed their stuff up. I know it won't work that way but I can dream...lol |

| I believe I saw somewhere mention that Google is using a Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON?!) for their Gigabit network. If that is the case and it's not something such as GXPON or another form of modulation, Verizon could very well say "1Gbps, tomorrow night, do it" and have 1Gbps/1Gbps going to everyone. That is provided that the ONTs are up to the task and the newer ActionTec routers (Rev. G and I) are up to the task.
Apparently the Google Fiber router is believed to be made by ActionTec as well. No surprise, since their routers have nice hardware in them. The firmware is another issue, however. |

There's a difference between being THE competition and HAVING competition.
So think any cableco vs. googlefiber or fios vs. googlefiber. Which competition pair is most likely? Googlefiber can take on any cableco. Neither google nor verizon want to take each other on at this time. Neither one has pockets that deep. Shareholders won't allow it.
Besides, you know how long it took to fiber up your area. Do you think you could stand it again to wait for reality?
All the google hype now was fios hype in '05. You'll find that google, just like verizon is now, will turn into just another cableco. They're all in predictable life stages.
To the OP's question: if I was stuck with high price cable or slow tech dsl or worse, I'd be tempted, very tempted. But we know that Kansas City is a test bed for google's other dreams. Sure they can control the network and what's done on it, but that's nowhere near as lucrative to their main business.
Kansas City is just a means to another end. |

McBane join:2008-08-22 Plano, TX | I don't think Google fiber uses a passive optical network so technically it can provide far superior speeds than what FiOS has deployed even in GPON areas, so hell yes I would go for it. More for less? Who wouldn't? Let's not beat around the bush, what google has deployed, Verizon would have to completely rip out and replace their current FiOS network with a more expensive active network and IPTV solution. Google did their fiber network right from step 1. Verizon is years behind even with FiOS.
I'm very happy with my 150/65 though and that's still better than what most people in the US and the world have. If I had google fiber I would have to like turn my garage into a mini datacenter or something. Maybe google will find a way into most markets as it's own new Telco in a decade or two though? Who knows. |

OwlSaverOwlSaverPremium join:2005-01-30 Berwyn, PA | reply to fnnews I tried FiOS to see what it was like. At the time, I was OK with Comcast. But after having FiOS for a short while I could not see going back to Comcast. I would do the same thing if Google Fiber became available. I would try it and see how it was. |

lol thats what i pay for FIOS, its 130 and after taxes and fees its $200
"rally your neighbors"
no thanks, i dont even talk to my neighbors, and perhaps if i lived in bumcrap middle america where theres only dialup, Google swooping in would matter.
i live in Florida, if their business model isnt geared toward one of the most popular/growing states then im not worried about it.
i lived in NJ all my life and FIOS was held out by Crapvision and was no where close to laying out wire, if Google even makes it into Florida between FIOS and Comcast and Brighthouse in 20 years, then well talk.
if i move out into the middle of know where, where its either slow Sattelite internet or some mom n pop DSL or horrible cable and Fios didnt already roll its services out, then ill get Google.
EDIT- just checked the channel lineup, no ESPN at all, no thanks, which means no ESPN3 access either. and i dont care if its one of their "additional channels", i pay 130 and get that plus the NFL Network which they have in their ad at the top of the page like its a major selling point that no other service provider has or perhaps trying to fool you into thinking you'll actually be able to watch NFL which is on CBS/FOX/NBC/ESPN none of which are listed but u can see the 1-2 games on the NFLN each year. assuming the Rams or Chiefs aren't playing cause then it would be blacked out in Kansas/MO and they would have to watch it on local network which they dont have access to either. |

If you deploy Google fiber to a similar size footprint as FiOS it would be even more expensive. |

prisaz join:2008-08-11 Germantown, MD | Yes I love my FiOS. But $70 for gigabit. I might just want two fibers to my house. FiOS TV. And Google Internet. |
|
McBane join:2008-08-22 Plano, TX | Heh yea I couldn't live without ESPN either so I guess I'd have two fibers as well Did google really not include ESPN? That's dumb.
EDIT: Wow just checked and yea no ESPN, they are that dumb... I guess Google has a lot to learn about the TV business |

Really? Your getting gigabits speed for $130 with FIOS? I would take 1Gbps speed over ESPN any day. -- "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" Edmund Burke |

| reply to fnnews I'd hold out for a slightly better deal... I've got 50/8 w/ cablevison ($45).. so I'd want at least 100/100 or more for $40... can't justify $70 for gigabit.. if they acutally offered a lower paid tier, a ton of people would jump on that provided it blowed away whatever cable & telco were offering stand-alone (ie, double the speed for $5 less) If it were here tomorrow, I would. |

Hmmm. Well I moved here (Wylie, TX) when I moved to DFW area specifically to be in a FIOS area.
And if Google Fiber competed with FIOS, I would assume Verizon would try to compete in some respect. Maybe not symmetrical gigabit, but 500/500 for a reasonable price? I was your neighbor in Sachse assuming you lived in Wylie between '97 and 2000.
