Those sports channels are THE reason for rate hikes. They charge a hefty price for retransmission due to their popularity. I can see not having them initially since it would significantly reduce the rates they have to charge.

That happened to me except my speed was 155 down and 180 upload :P It's a shame I don't really use more than 10-20mbps on the upload side of my connection because it sure would've been useful.

let me know what their provisions are when they arent servicing 1 small section of 1 state in the entire country, and then lets see how the price doesnt increase while giving lower initial speeds and less content than obviously Verizon an others already provide with more than enough bandwidth.

the highest throughput for HD MLB.tv games isnt even over 1MB/s and thats at the highest peak, most of the time the data is mere few hundred KB/s and thats on a 50MB connection and the 2-3 highest feeds on MLB.tv have zero noticeable compression artefacts, with the advancements of compression theres no reason to need 1GB, thats like owning a Ferrari, its manual says it can go 200mph but you dont live in Germany and drive on the Autobahn, so its pointless and not worth more than any other car that can go 60mhp consistently.

youtube videos will still buffer during peak times cause your throughput has nothing to do with 99% of media sites not equipped to service that amount of data at this time anyways which goes for uploading too, you can send it but most likely most sites would bottleneck and take just as long to upload the file as it does now with 50mb upload

Hmmm. Well I moved here (Wylie, TX) when I moved to DFW area specifically to be in a FIOS area.

And if Google Fiber competed with FIOS, I would assume Verizon would try to compete in some respect. Maybe not symmetrical gigabit, but 500/500 for a reasonable price?

More expensive?! $23 Billion for FIOS wasn't pocket change for Verizon...

Verizon also just isn't one one small metro area. FiOS is awesome but Google fiber is technically superior. If you deploy Google fiber to a similar size footprint as FiOS it would be even more expensive.

no thanks, i dont even talk to my neighbors, and perhaps if i lived in bumcrap middle america where theres only dialup, Google swooping in would matter.

i live in Florida, if their business model isnt geared toward one of the most popular/growing states then im not worried about it.

i lived in NJ all my life and FIOS was held out by Crapvision and was no where close to laying out wire, if Google even makes it into Florida between FIOS and Comcast and Brighthouse in 20 years, then well talk.

if i move out into the middle of know where, where its either slow Sattelite internet or some mom n pop DSL or horrible cable and Fios didnt already roll its services out, then ill get Google.

EDIT- just checked the channel lineup, no ESPN at all, no thanks, which means no ESPN3 access either. and i dont care if its one of their "additional channels", i pay 130 and get that plus the NFL Network which they have in their ad at the top of the page like its a major selling point that no other service provider has or perhaps trying to fool you into thinking you'll actually be able to watch NFL which is on CBS/FOX/NBC/ESPN none of which are listed but u can see the 1-2 games on the NFLN each year. assuming the Rams or Chiefs aren't playing cause then it would be blacked out in Kansas/MO and they would have to watch it on local network which they dont have access to either.

Who knows.

There's a difference between being THE competition and HAVING competition.

So think any cableco vs. googlefiber or fios vs. googlefiber. Which competition pair is most likely? Googlefiber can take on any cableco. Neither google nor verizon want to take each other on at this time. Neither one has pockets that deep. Shareholders won't allow it.

Besides, you know how long it took to fiber up your area. Do you think you could stand it again to wait for reality?

All the google hype now was fios hype in '05. You'll find that google, just like verizon is now, will turn into just another cableco. They're all in predictable life stages.

To the OP's question: if I was stuck with high price cable or slow tech dsl or worse, I'd be tempted, very tempted. But we know that Kansas City is a test bed for google's other dreams. Sure they can control the network and what's done on it, but that's nowhere near as lucrative to their main business.

Kansas City is just a means to another end.

EDIT: Just preregistered and was told they were currently concentrating on deploying in both KCs but had an email sign up for Google Fiber updates and to be notified when Google Fiber came to my area.

I think everyone should preregister who want it so they no where else they could go and possible put pressure on other ISPs to speed their stuff up. I know it won't work that way but I can dream...lol

I don't think it's the speed, though, as the article suggests. I think Google's angle is net neutrality concerns. As a content provider, they are worried that they will not be able to access customers, or will be able to do so only at the price Comcast, Verizon, TWC, etc. demand. This is a hedge against that.

I doubt the price has much to do with the costs google is currently incurring on this venture.

It's the most populous (Kansas City, MO) and third most populous city of a single metropolitan area. Don't hold your breath waiting for Google to bring fiber to another metro area.

Would I switch if it where available in my area? Depends. IF it came to my city AND the prices stayed the same AND I was able to the same channels with the same or better quality, then yes, I would switch.
