Re: Generac GP17500E Generator

Until recently diesel railroad engines were never shut down. Sometimes they would sit and idle for hours. Now they do shut them down because of fuel costs.

Railroads prefer to keep locomotives idling for two reasons, the primary one being a warm engine is a bear to restart and second beeze if there is a possibility of the temps dropping below 32 the engineer is required to dump the cooling water out of the engine when tying it down if the locomotive is not equipped with temperature controlled dump valves.

Either way the cooling system must be refilled before firing the locomotive back up which is not only a time consuming process it requires a ready supply of clean water and lots of it, heck a basic locomotive such as a GP-40 requires 254 gallons of cooling water.

Hence the reason so many locomotives are tied down with the reverser removed and left to idle when not in service.

And as a foamer I can assure you when it comes to wet stacking, pffft, even after day of idling that is not a problem.

Is this true of some/many/most/all diesel engines, or just locomotives? I always thought trucks left their engines idling because they didn't want them to get COLD!

If you are interested in railroad technology check out this website:

I am trying to locate the website that offered a tri fuel conversion kit for the Generac GP17500E. They had a version of a 15,000 Watt portable that looked like the 15,000 watt Generac on their website that was already converted to tri fuel. It might be this website:

Getting back to the original question did any one find a way to connect the GP17500E to a residential load center that would deliver all available power to the load center without modifying the GP17500E?

As far as I can tell that is not possible without compromising code compliance and safety.

The least amount of generator modification would require to install a Ground-Neutral bond in the generator. That would allow to connect two transfer panels (one 50A panel and one 30A panel) to the generator. The two transfer panels are not allowed to bond ground and neutral. They must switch hot and neutral (for utility power the ground-neutral bond will be in a main panel and both transfer panels will be wired as subpanels). Furthermore the ground wire in either power cable (since it is a plug connection) cannot satisfy the grounding requirements. In this mode of operation the generator must be bonded from the generator ground lug to the grounding electrode of the structure with a wire sufficiently sized for the peak current that the generator may produce.

In order to get all rated power of the generator to a single load center would require more substantial modifications to the generator.
