Motorola SB 5101N cable modem indicators

Just purchased a Motorola cable modem SB 5101N. Plugged into power source without cable or ethernet connections to test if dead or alive. All indicators except 'power' momentarily illuminated, immediately followed by all indicators off. 'Receive' light then flashed momentarily until 'Send' light started flashing at which point the 'Receive' light went solid.
My question is why does the 'Power' light not illuminate at any time?
Will this change once I am connected to ISP service?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am not sure if my new modem is a dud.

Hmmm... I have heard that if the power light turns off after the diagnostic boot up, it is due to a faulty power supply. Power should be on even if not connected to service provider. Unless someone else can verify this, best info I can give you.
