cable modem, mississauga, high packet loss

To many sites especially in the U.S. the packet loss is very high. Including this forum right now. Within TSI it isn't a problem meaning I can VPN and VoIP without issue. Via a cell tether is fine. Oddly I can VPN to a TSI fibre location and from there it is fine. The problem seems limited to cable modem via wolfedale for me.

----did all the modem and router checks and boots.

To me, it looks like specific servers are not responding.

One of teksavvy's server is down I think because I'm sure there's 4 teksavvy servers before it gets outside to somewhere.

It's a lot more destinations, even this forum itself is nearly unusable. However if I route my traffic via a TSI fibre location near Malton all traffic is working fine.

My brother can play DayZ fine, watch youtube fine, and all on other laptops and computers, but this one is acting strange with the packet loss...

I don't know if it's another form of a dns virus or something but I get random packet loss everywhere.

Routing through Malton....is this easy? Can you explain how? Thanks.

It's easy for me but no, not generally easy unless you have someone elsewhere with bandwidth, vpn, and is working fine. My part time job is at a site with a TSI fibre connection where I can VPN in and out when I need to. My email, web server, etc are all there and working great. Their access back out is not a problem but it is from my house.

a speedtest to the TSI server is excellent but many other places fails due to timeouts.

Thanks for the reply. Ok, not do-able for me

Speedtest.net won't open for me either

Hope TSI is looking into this

speaking of VPNs without a lot of detail, there are many VPN services out on the internet. I also have a cheap VPS that I use for U.S. VPN that's a little more than $1/mth. Very low power but works perfectly for simple tunneling.

So here's the funny thing right now:
The normal Netflix.ca isn't working at all. But via my $1 VPN that routes me via the southern U.S. I can get Netflix.com and stream movies no problem. Via the VPN I can also get to all the places I can't get to without the VPN. I'm lucky that I can route fine to the VPS.

So there's a problem either with wolfedale or getting past Front St.

I can't connect to google.ca anymore, it times out now, meaning that server went down for me.

It sure looks like a internet blackout for some canadians.

We are currently aware of an issue on the Wolfdale POI. We are working on it & are attempting to get this fixed ASAP.

Can I ask what VPN you use? I've used hotspot shield but find it slow at times....guess that's due to using the freebie

I subscribe to a DNS redirect to accomplish the same thing. I found it quicker, not to mention the services are available on all my devices. Was $4/month with an annual sub.

There are a lot of VPNs out there and by chance I'm using SecureDragon when I caught a really good deal. My router keeps a tunnel up for any local device going to Pandora and select places like that. On the media centre I use a compressed SSH tunnel with a Socks proxy where I can use Firefox for tunneled sites such as the U.S. Netflix and any other browser for normal use. The smartphone run OpenVPN whenever I need it or if I'm on an open WiFI at a coffee shop etc. Other computers can use it in several ways.

The big internet outage down south and or the storms today might play a part, I don't know.

Since I can't get to many places I checked the tunnel and picked the first HD stream I could find and am watching "Goon", the first scene has Georges Laraque making a cameo... So that was fun, the brief shot of the shoulder patch looked almost like the TSI logo...

So even a low power VPN can stream HD no problem. I'd suggest a Chicago server if you can get it, that seems to be fast from here.

Good to hear the problem is known and will get fixed. No sweat with the VPN for now...

Thanks for both replies guys. I'm going to consider both options. I'm going to try netflix free trial when I'm down in S.C. in September. If I like it and I can get netflix through my tv, so the dns might be the better option but I'll look at the vpn too.

thanks!
