If nobody wants Google Fiber...

Then he nor his employers should be worried about it at all. Just let them build it and fail.

I guess we'll see if nobody wants it when they get to the end of their "rally" and start rolling it out.

Yes, why concern yourself and make public statements about something that nobody will want or use being it will just fail on it's own?

Surely he is doing it just so when it does fail, he can stand on the mountain top screaming how he was right and predicted it.

Or maybe he just missed the part where he is going to look like a complete asshat when it doesnt fail, brings the competitors to their knees and forces them to actually compete or move on.

Well, he has to say something. Otherwise, the companies paying him might wonder what they're getting for their money.

And he isn't just railing against Google Fiber. By extension, he's arguing that any similar project is unnecessary. And there are others, such as GigU and OneCommunity.

In the eyes of the incumbents, Google Fiber, LUS, and Chattanooga's FTTH project are like viruses. If they're viewed as successes, other communities may follow suit, and they can't allow that to happen.

Which is why the incumbents are likely working on stop methods for those services. for community projects they buy laws, to fight Google they likely will try to bribe whoever controls pole access in the region.

Re: If nobody wants Google Fiber...

Buying laws may be easier than blocking pole access. Sure, you can bribe people, but if Google sues and uncovers such bribery, things will look very bad for the incumbents. Plus, when you get into bribery to keep competition out, you're looking at things that people can go to jail for. People love to hate the cable and phone companies, so if something like that got out, the reaction would be explosive.

With the kind of hysterical comments this guy wrote, I'm not sure if the incumbents have a clear plan for fighting Google. I think they're hoping that the KC deployment is a one-time deal, and they probably will try to fight it with price reductions tied to contracts. They could offer, say, $19.99 Internet for two years with a contract, hoping to starve the new service of customers before it gets going.

yea contracts and deals will be their weapon with stiff ETFs. Because if Google Fiber actually goes deep into the black, the investors will want them to target other cities. And if they can crack pulling to MDUs with gigabit to every single apartment they could hit markets like NYC.

You mean $1 per month for two years? For a similar 5/1 plan like the $300 Google Fiber installation only plan? The 5/1 Google plan works out to be about $3.60/ month if you get the entire 7 year service time.

Re: If nobody wants Google Fiber...

Perhaps, but I doubt they'd go that low, not for everyone, at least. The shareholders would scream bloody murder if they did. However, I could see them doing it if the subscriber took a certain level of TV service.

There's a small window of opportunity for that to work, though. Right now, to many people, Google Fiber is an unknown quantity. Once some friends get it, however, it could prove way more attractive as word of mouth spreads. The incumbents need to lock people into contracts before that happens.

Re: If nobody wants Google Fiber...

I am guessing CSRs have already seen training videos in that region to explain why TWC or AT&T is "better" and why caps or metered billing is a "better customer experience".

correct, lets hope we see more fiber.. not saying from google its self even though it would be nice to see them take it further no one is sure weather or not they will..

on the side of that though if and if they did decide to all the major city's in the USA the cable co's would be scared sh*tless because by then Google them selves would be taking a major part of the cable cos revenue's if this is Google plan so be it the cable companies did it on them selves threatening Google's revenue's
