Re: frontier will be using a mix of bonded adsl2+ and vdsl2 techI wonder if they will offer this to those that just got DSL installed last year through their new 48 port DSLAM's. Is this something that they are only doing to those that are in cities that have not been upgraded yet that are on the older Verizon DSLAM's or are they going ahead and doing the upgrades to those that have gotten the upgrades since they took over Verizon? |

Is your area on ADSL2+?
My town had no DSL at all until after the Frontier transition, and now has these new bonded plans available. |

I have a Westell 7500 ADSL2+ modem. Did your area go straight to a bonded modem or did you have the ADSL2+ modem first? |

I had a Westell 7500 from when they brought DSL to this area until just last week.
At first they only offered 3Mb service, which then was upgraded to 7.1Mb and the new bonded plans recently. |

So some areas will have bonded ADSL2+ while others will have VDSL2? Which one is better and how will you know which one you will get? The box is right across the road from me which is good. |

VDSL2: Range comparable to ADSL2+ via RE-VDSL2 but those very close to the DSLAM could possibly see speeds of 100Mbps/100Mbps in the future, but sharply drops in speed down to ADSL levels. Often used with Interleaved mode because nobody uses FastPath on VDSL :P . ADSL2+ is souped up ADSL with a max of 24/3 theoretical if Annex. M is used.
Pick your poison I suppose! VDSL2 would be the definite "better" answer for the sheer amount of bandwidth it can potentially provide, but it is very range limited. ADSL2+ is superior if you're far away from the DSLAM. It's a bit more stable.
I'm hoping with the new roll-outs Frontier has with their VDSL and ADSL2+ network that they start to eliminate the old ATM network in favor of pure Ethernet. I'm pretty sure IP DSLAMs use Pure Ethernet rather than ATM-based links back to aggregate. If they're doing VDSL they have to start using Ethernet. I'm not aware of many VDSL DSLAMs that support ATM as aggregate links. Even if the ADSL2 DSLAMs move to Ethernet/PPP-based links, they still use ATM between the modem and the card so user modems should still work. |

So they are probably using ADSL2+ in rural areas and DVSL2 in populated areas then? |

Re: frontier will be using a mix of bonded adsl2+ and vdsl2 techA pity, but it doesn't look like it's available out of my CO yet. I'm content with my 6/1 service, but certainly wouldn't say "No" if more speed was available.
I've talked to a few of Frontier's techs about this technology and they're all very excited about it. They tell me that they're using it to offer Metro Area Ethernet connections to business customers, while they are also starting to use it to feed their DSL remotes. In the latter case it should allow them to offer higher speeds out of the remotes, even if they don't upgrade them to VDSL/bonded ADSL2. Part of the issue with remotes is limited backhaul, this will hopefully solve it. |

Re: frontier will be using a mix of bonded adsl2+ and vdsl2 techWell after 6 days past my original appointment they were finally able to come out and install it. They were trained on it last week so I am pretty understanding as to why it took so long to get it to me. The tech told me that the customer service reps were wrong and they don't offer the "Ultimate" package out here yet (VDSL 25/3) and they installed bonded ADSL2+ (12/2). They ran a new line for the bonded service and so far I am not impressed. My speeds are all over the place anywhere from 11 down to 2 down. Up is consistent at 1.5mbps. Tech said they had to do something to shorten my line (or terminate something on the line, I have no idea), but I'm pretty disappointed considering I was getting 5.78mbps down consistently with no drops before I got the upgrade. Customer service is going to have engineering take a look at the equipment to see what speeds I can actually get, but if they do offer VDSL I'm assuming I'll need a new modem yet again. They gave me a Zyxel P-663HN-51 for this installation.

Re: frontier bonding adsl 2 + vdslWell I met with three folks from Frontier today at their neighborhood display they set up. I was assured that they were working hard on upgrading their equipment and that they were progressively turning up the speed on their remotes at locations all around this area. I asked about the stand alone internet product and was told that 12/2 service would be $49.95 a month with no separate modem charges. I was also told that their would be no extra taxes on top of the monthly charge since this service would not include phone service. They are going to have one of their sales reps call me to discuss all of the particulars, but this does not mean that I am going to take the plunge and order the service. I was also told that I would have one month to evaluate the service.
Seeing that I am a quarter mile from the DSLAM I was assured that I would see very close to the advertised speed and that congestion problems that I saw a few years ago were a thing of the past. |

Go for it! What do you have too lose? |

The only issue I notice so far is that ping is extremely high when you run into your download speed limit when congestion is a factor. The greatly increased latency is not shown in this test, but I thought it was cool to have a symmetrical speed. |

said by Dolfan:Go for it! What do you have too lose? I am currently in a one year deal with Time Warner for their Extreme service at 30/5 for $49.95 a month. It flies ! However, this deal ends in December and I really do not need this sort of speed. Well the upload is nice when I am uploading a bunch of full sized photos to the web. But I will not pay the full price for Extreme in December. That would be $75 a month. So my choices are standard speed Time Warner at 10/1 for $54.99 a month or possibly Earthlink cable which is a good deal at $51.90 a month for 20/2 speed. Actually Earthlink cable looks to be the best option unless Frontier would match that price for their 25 Mbps service. And then there is Earthlink 10/1 cable for $41.95 a month. 12/2 Frontier DSL for $49.95 may be my least likely option, although I am curious to see if the improvements they made would translate into a consistently good internet experience. |

I'm not sure how accurate the new site is, it also states that all of the plans are available to me. The last time I checked with Frontier on the phone 12/2 was the fastest in the area.
With the current congestion that seems to be affecting my area I doubt they would be selling higher speeds. I am getting around 2Mb out of the 12Mb plan during prime time now. |

I live two blocks from the CO, so it would not be a question of distance. I will give it a few days and see if they update their site over the weekend.
The area is all setup with new equipment but I don't think there is much bandwidth feeding the CO yet. It seems they have oversold a lot in the last couple of months. |

I just received confirmation today from my friends over at the CO. My area (Sanborn, NY) recently had the CO and the RTs all upgraded with brand spanking new ADSL2+ and VDSL2 tech. They haven't announced anything officially yet, and speeds are still 3Mbps/384kbps for residential, 6M/600k for business but higher speeds are on the way! |
