$500 + $200 for video card + $80 for HDD = Same price for way better performance, SSD included.
I've used that case as well. It isn't the highest quality, nor is it the lowest. |

KrisnatharokCaveat EmptorPremium join:2009-02-11 Earth Orbit kudos:8 | It's a good deal, but not for us.
The CPU is $70 cheaper at Microcenter, we don't need the ram ($43) and I'm not sure he's getting an SSD ($65), which sort of wipes out the $100 savings they're giving you on the bundle. -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |

Although, if a MC is near you, don't they have the CPU+Mobo bundle for Intel or AMD that could cut your costs? |

edit: There is a Gigabyte mobo for $100, but the deal also *requires* you buy the i5-3570k, other models don't get you a price break on the mobos. |

Gordo74Premium join:2003-10-28 Monroeville, PA | reply to Krisnatharok I like the updated build better. I still think an SSD would make the experience much snappier, but I digress.
The video card has me thinking. You could either spend the $275 on the 570, which, admittedly above, is a great bang for the buck, but if it's just going to be a single monitor system, I would think the 7850 would be a much better value, especially because it overclocks like hell, uses less power, runs cooler, uses only 1 power PCIE connector and is at the level of the 570 in most games for ~$50 cheaper.
You can't go wrong either way, just trying to help shave a few more bucks. |
|
KrisnatharokCaveat EmptorPremium join:2009-02-11 Earth Orbit kudos:8 | I'll take a look at some 7850s. I haven't seen a lot on the 7000 series yet and have been waiting for the August price drop. |
|
Gordo74Premium join:2003-10-28 Monroeville, PA | reply to Krisnatharok Here's a step up from the 7850 that performs slightly better (not enough to warrant a second PCIE connector, but it's there... I'm no engineer though). Good deal. $225

Edit: Nvm, found some. Looks intriguing. If it is ~$250, I'll probably pick one up. |

me1212 join:2008-11-20 Pleasant Hill, MO | reply to Krisnatharok This is very very interesting! A 4.2ghx 4170(whats the difference between that and the 4100, other than the base speed and cpu wattage?) can go toe to toe with stock 2500k and 3570k. While I still love my 4.5ghz 2500k, and would prefer it to that any day of the week(faster compile times ftw), thats pretty freaking amazing.
I have a friend who got a 4100 because micro center had a free mobo deal with the purchase of it(at the time they were out of phenom II), shes been wanting to overclock and get more out of it and this looks promising. I assume that test uses the stock cooler, is is it the same one that comes on the rest of the bulldozers or is it different because of the high clock speed? |
|
KrisnatharokCaveat EmptorPremium join:2009-02-11 Earth Orbit kudos:8 | Not sure, I think I am going to stick with an Ivy Bridge i5, but I'd assume you can get some good numbers out of the 4170, especially if you get a CM Hyper 212+ ($30). That cooler should allow you to push close to 5 GHz. -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |

KrisnatharokCaveat EmptorPremium join:2009-02-11 Earth Orbit kudos:8 | reply to Krisnatharok Everything arrived yesterday after being shipped Monday. Verified and zero'd the HDD per Koitsu's fantastic post here. The Rosewill case is certainly decent for $48, but the space behind the backplate is virtually non-existent for cable management--cables fit very tightly, pressed up against the side of the case. I'll try to post pictures later on. There are certainly no complaints on the tool-less 3.5" and 5.25" bays.
The Asrock UEFI is very pretty and allows for some very easy maintenance. I ensured the SATA controller was set to AHCI (it was by default) and loaded the XMP 1600 memory profile because, while my memory was DDR3-1600, it was set by default to 1333. I don't have the pleasure of having XMP support on my x58 mobo, so this was certainly a joy to use.
All in all, everything came in working order and set up easily. I didn't get an aftermarket CPU cooler, and while I haven't stress-tested the rig yet, the i5 is idling at 34-38 C with the stock cooler, which is high, IMO. We'll see what burn-in temps are, but it appears my Prolimatech Megahalems, which was designed for 1156/1366 socket will fit on 1155, so I may throw that + two Yate Loon fans on the CPU. -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |
