For many people every event is an isolated incident that has no connection to any other. If you have this view you don't see trends and the ideas/philosophy behind them. For such people it'll come as a total surprise when the SHTF.
However, as you said, others have seen this coming for a long time. The question then becomes what to do about it. There's no place to run to and like you I believe there's no going back. The Genie is out of the bottle.
