Re: [TWC] Question about avoiding TWC's WiFi service charge

Thanks again everybody. I got the SB6141.

I love TWC customer service. First I call them to activate it then the automated customer support system asks if I hooked up the internet modem according to the install guide which I hadn't done yet so it said to call back after I did it. Of course it only takes a minute to hook it up so I did and then I called back. After I finally got a customer support person on the phone they proceeded to tell me that it will take 3 days to provision it in the TWC system. I asked then why did your automated system tell me to hook it up right away? It's annoying that to reconnect my old cable modem. I hope they email me when it's provisioned.

That's what I thought. I thought they just need to enter the cable modem model number and MAC address in the TWC system.

So do you have any recommendations how to make this happen in 10 min? Should I ask for TWC tech support or should I call Road Runner tech support?

I had a few problems getting mine activated back in April. It was right at that time they changed internal policies on activating customer owned modems.

In the end, I had the best luck getting over to the billing department. They added and then sent the hit to the modem. Just have to be clear to them you are upgrading your customer owned modem on your account and you have the MAC address already to give them.

Soon after you posted your message I got a voicemail from TWC indicating that they had added the SB6141 to my account. However I did a speed test on here and I didn't see any improvements in my speed. I guess I have to pay for some sort of premium service to see my speed increase.

What Internet plan are you on? Upgrading your cable modem to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem does not automatically increase your speed. If you want faster speeds, you would also need to call Time Warner and have them upgrade your Internet plan (which will cost you more money each month).

I'm on the standard internet plan so my download speed should be 10mbps but I'm only getting 3mbps which is the speed of the basic internet plan. I'll double check my speed via an ethernet connection instead of wifi and then contact TWC. Maybe I'll get them to upgrade me to the turbo internet plan if it's not much more money.

Try connecting the cable modem directly to a computer with its network cable?

Here are 3 speed tests with my laptop connected directly to the cable modem via ethernet. I'm getting between 3-4 mb/s download and my service is supposed to get up to 10 mb/s. Should I contact TWC because I should be getting much closer to 10 mb/s or am I getting what I should expect?

Sure if it never went close to 10 Mb/sec. Just remember, it is UP to that limit and you won't get alway gety that high. What about peak hours? Does it get slower?
