Computer Hardware Help → [memory] Are these RAM chips the same?

Greetings all....

I've got a Dell Inspiron 531s, and I need to upgrade the RAM to its max, of 4GB, so I can put W7 on it. Dell says max RAM per slot is 1G, so I obviously need four, 1G sticks. But:

Current: Four 512MB sticks, PC5300 667mhz CL5

Dell indicates that proper RAM is PC6400 800Mhz (no spec on latency)

I can find 1GB chips: PC6400 800Mhz CL6 fairly easily, but its hard to find that same memory in CL5, unless I hop up to 2GB per stick (which the mobo won't support)

Question: Will PC6400 800Mhz CL6 work on my motherboard just like PC5300 667Mhz CL5 is working now?

So, you want to max out your ram to 4GB, yet you have 512MB ram with CL5..

You dont have to care about the 512MB ram stuff. Since those are getting replace.

Get 2 of these. You will then have total of 4GB.
