Now you can pay with a smartphone...

quote:
SMARTPHONES will replace wallets in a new world-first trial starting in Australia today.

The three-month pilot program by Westpac and MasterCard will see debit card information securely programmed into a phone's SIM card, letting users pay for goods by tapping a mobile phone at the cash register.

"securely programmed"? Isn't that an oxymoron? Securely?

I'd be more concerned about what other information is collected (from your SmartPhone) besides your CC details.

I thought I'd lost mine last week while hiking. I wasn't too worried as its a $10 dumb pre-paid one. All the contact info is backed up to 3 PC's so the only hassle would've been buying a new one (same model). It has no critical info on it at all.

Some keep their whole lives on their phone and therefore freak out when they misplace/lose it.

If you concern about it, then become your own email provider. It's easy and it brings many other advantages as well...

So? My email provider doesn't have my cc number. That's one less link to worry about.

Found an iphone on the front lawn close to the road yesterday..called one of the numbers on it that ended up to be the gal friend of the owner..this is a rural country road and can't figure out how it got there..except the gal said he car pools with another friend and works at the federal pen near frackville pa.

He is suppose to be picking it up today after work..this is going to be interesting.

I'm not concerned. Nor do I have the $$$ to set up a personal exchange server that a typical smartphone uses to store address books.

I'll be perfectly honest, I can't figure out why it's taken this long to catch on. You could do this in a lot of places in Japan and S.Korea almost a decade ago.

Probably because our providers couldn't figure out how to get a cut of each transaction. Most likely those countries are BYOD and not seriously provider locked down like the phones over here.

Walk into Perkins restaurant the other day and showed them the coupons they emailed me for free and discount stuff on my Phone..but they said no go..they need a hard copy..I don't travel with a printer and told them if they want hard copies to stop sending email coupon and start mailing them through the regular US post.

*amn straight. They should talk to my wife, she gets a cut of every transaction (e.g. paycheck) I get.

The tech industry is really behind the times if you ask me.

Yep, more than likely. And considering I could hop ISP's and cell companies like I change underwear you're right. Though apple did try their hardest to change that(network locking), and the market rebelled hard.
