I'm coming home, Microsoft!

To whom It may concern:

After spending almost 1 month searching for the "perfect antivirus" (in my enthusiasm I bought WSA , after that Bullguard and finally Avast! Pro) I came to the conclusion that the best combination for me is MSE 4.0 + MBAM Pro + PC Tools Firewall Plus.

All compatible each other, no impact on PC (Win 7 Pro 64, i3, 8 Gb Ram).

MSE is the only one which will scan a downloaded file immediately after download, without user initiating a "right click" scan. MSE update can be implemented through Task Scheduler (every 1 hour) , so I can turn "Automatic Update" off.

MSE can do the same things my AV can do - auto scans, auto updates (when I want) and scan downloaded files. In fact - very few don't do these things...

That's great that you found a combo that you're comfortable with not to mention that it's not a bad mix either.
There would be a lot less grief if more users were as diligent.
One correction I believe is in order is that MSE is the only app you were able to configure for scanning on download rather than MSE being the only app capable of scanning on download.

Hi,

Which AV do you have and how did you setup it to automatically scan a RAR file imediately after download?

My mistake, sorry.

I wanted to say the only AV which will scan a RAR file automatically after download.

Well, my old Avast! 4.8 says it scans a zipped file as well, but I always do a scan after I extract it. Better safe, than sorry.

It scans "on demand" , not automatically after download.

Perhaps in that case you should qualify further and make a distinction between free and paid versions of various software.

I also use the free version of MSE as my 'real time' scanner, but I also have the free versions of SAS and MBAM - neither of which offers realtime download scans while their PAID counterparts do.

I beg to differ. After FF downloads it, I'll see a message in the same window "scanning for viruses". That's what happens for me, anyway.

Claudiu, it has been interesting to read about your process to figure out what software works best for you. It really points out that every person and every computer is different and that each person needs to find what works best for them.

I also have MBAM Pro and am waiting for Avast! to come up with a new version of AIS that will not kill my computers. I have been running MSE in the meantime on my desktop. My computer sure runs fast with MSE! I am not very confident with MSE's detection rates, however. I suppose it depends on what kind of user/browser one is as to whether or not it is good enough. I am just using the Windows firewall.

Just let me know if we are talking about the same thing: a RAR file, not a regular one ;

In my test (WSA, Avast! , Bullguard) the antivirus will not do anything, I can finish downloading, even move the RAR file here and there and there is no reaction.

However, if i scan that RAR file, (right click---> scan with ***) or if I unRAR it, the antivirus will detect and quarantine.

Only MSE will unpack it and scan it imediatelly after download without my interaction.

I did state earlier that it says it was scanning a zipped file... I didn't say it did, hence my doing a manual scan after extraction.

Congratulations on finding a mix that works well for your computer. Isn't it nice to be able to take a rest for a while from that eternal quest that we are all always on?

Don't be mis-lead by seeing the download scan GUI of a file.
I can produce a log of the .zip or .rar file being scanned as soon as it has finished after the web A/V has allowed the url and download to occur. What I use is Kaspersky. I have no doubts every other major player in the A/V game would do the same too. Just because you see a window saying it is scanned, doesn't mean others do not.

Good to hear you tested this yourself, however once you feel like venturing more out there in Internet land, before spending more money, use trials after reviewing sites like these:

Bullguard and avast! just blocked an infected rar before I could click save. I didn't even need to change any of Bullguard's default settings.
