[CFL] Unusual Flashing of the Cable Modem Data LED

I have a Toshiba PCX2500 cable modem which has been problem-free for over ten years.

Ever since the modem was installed (June 2002), the data LED would flash constantly whenever the PC was powered on, even when the browser was closed and nothing was uploading/downloading.

Today, for the first time ever, I noticed the data LED does not flash unless I'm uploading/downloading. Everything appears to be working fine, so I see no need to contact customer support. I'm just curious why, after all these years, the data light is suddenly behaving differently.

If you have followed me here long enough we have discussed the lights on the front of the modems previously. UNLESS you are having a problem and we have asked you for the status of these lights ignore them. There is nothing to worry about.

Thanks for your reply.

I was just wondering why the sudden change in network behaviour after 10+ years. Then again, I've been curious why the data LED was always so 'busy' when the PC was on and not doing anything.

Whether or not your browser is open or closed, the modem is communicating with the CMTS, syncing internet time with your PC and any number of other things that will show as traffic on your modem. It's nothing to be concerned with. If you're concerned your modem may be failing for whatever reason you can swap it for free at a payment center. As it's 10 years old, that might not be a bad idea anyway.

But MikeR you said everything is working fine...speeds good, no page errors nothing to indicate a problem right? If so don't let yourself be tricked into conjuring up a problem where none exists...on the otherhand if you are having problems say so.

Right, no problems yet.

I was waiting to see if someone would post something like this: "The modem does that just before it croaks!".

BHN, as to not confuse me with MikeR, I am a completely different person (My real name and initials so not a game. I really do appreciate your responses and feedback; it does ease me with the PCX2500 unit. Maybe it's because of my sometimes-chronic ocd, but I still keep looking at the data light not flashing constantly like it- and my previous sci-atl & sci-atl 'webstar' units used to do. I am in the CFL area (Lake county specifically.) Wonder if BH did an update for some reason and if this is happening to more than just us two. But as you said, don't worry.. so I will do my best not to. I will just take a deep breath and try to move on.. Blocking out of my head whether this would still happen if i hooked up the pc directly to the modem or router's ethernet port instead of wireless.

I'm in Seminole County, so it's likely many other customers are affected.

It's not an AFFECTED type of issue guys. Nothing is wrong honestly. Try not to pay attention to the status indicators unless you have a problem and even then just hit me up and I'll take a look....honestly there is nothing for you to worry about.

Actually, I prefer the present operation of the modem. Now it's easy to tell if the PC is sitting idle, or if something is going on like an auto update.
