The Facebook camera that can recognise you every time...quote: Shoppers could soon be automatically recognised when they walk into a shop using a controversial new camera.
Called Facedeals, the camera uses photos uploaded to Facebook to recognise people as they walk in.

"Facebook has come under intense congressional scrutiny for taking steps toward facial recognition, with the purchase of Face.com. However, after only a month, it ceased using the technology to automatically suggest which friends to tag in photos. As Redpepper explains in a blog post, the alleged technology is done completely through a voluntary app: The Facedeals app must be authorized via your Facebook account. With your help, the app verifies your most recent photo tags, using those to map the physical appearance of your face. Our custom-developed cameras then simply use this existing data to identify you in the real world. Personalized deals can now be delivered to your Smartphone from all participating locationsall you have to do is show your face. Redpepper argues that the technology will help both consumers and businesses use the magic of Facebook to more efficiently dole out deals. What do you think? Creepy or awesome? Our Facebook specialist Josh Constine wanted it be clear that Facedeals is not approved or endorsed by Facebook. It merely uses the social network as an easy way for people to upload photos for Facedeals to do its own facial recognition processing. In fact, considering the name and coloring, Facedeals could get slapped with a trademark infringement lawsuit. Facebook is trying to downplay its use of facial recog technology, and probably wont take kindly to this confusion and possibly fear-inducing employment of its platform." » techcrunch.com/2012/08/1 ··· awesome/ |

Definitely creepy. If I found out a store was using that, I'd quit patronizing that store. No exceptions. |

Yes Facebook users have to voluntarily sign-up for Facedeals but how many sheeple will do it for a free beer/coffee/bagel?
There have been a number of Hollywood movies where citizens are tracked everywhere (e.g. The Minority Report). That day is coming but they're doing it to themselves.
Oh well Bob only has old photo's of me. |

I don't know about this specifically, but I am being bombarded to add a Safeway app (even though I don't have a smart cell phone, it can also be added to my Safeway club card that has a false name on it) so that I get "personalized" freebies, coupons without coupon clipping, etc. I walk into the store and get immediately grabbed by an employee hovering by the entrance who wants me to sit down at the computers and "upgrade" my club card (this is after the employee shows disappointment that I don't have a smart cell phone). To upgrade, I will have to give Safeway enough information that I can no longer have a card with a false name which may not matter since I frequently use my Discover card there which has my real name on it but I still am reluctant. I finally get out of there without having "upgraded" my card to find that the strawberries I came into buy "on sale" at $4 a pound are all sold out. This is on a day that Safeway gets a Matson container load delivered so they shouldn't be sold out. I ask a produce guy and he says "oh, we are sold out because everyone is buying them for $2 a pound". I say, but the weekly Safeway ad says they are on sale for $4 a pound. He replies "You don't have your club card upgraded? And you didn't download the app to your cell phone? The strawberries are only #2 a pound that way and we had a huge run on them. You need to upgrade your card". Sigh. This is why folks "voluntarily" sign up to sell their souls, especially in Hawaii where prices are at least 20-30% higher than even in California (which is much higher prices than say Arkansas), and where most jobs are low paying in the tourist industry. It is through our pocketbooks that most Americans will end up either being hungry or "owned". |

What are they going to do with it? Who will they share it with?". The shiny thing in front them is just, well, too shiny to resist. |

And in real life now, aside from facial recognition already in use, they are trying high resolution cameras that scan, not the retina, but the iris, which as it would turn out, are as unique as fingerprints as well. |
