speedshop posted : Sanity, did you find the problem with your 'crank,no start' with your Altima? My 2002 2.5 Altima does the same thing, BUT I have to disconnect the 'Camshaft sensor', as opposed to the 'Crankshaft sensor', in order for it to start up. I have acceleration but not near the full torque power I'd expect. New crank & cam sensors but still same problem. 3 expert mechanics are baffled. not spending another dime for new parts in order to 'hit & miss' the issue.

Managed to drive it Autozone, they said I should take it to the dealer to get scanned.

They pulled stored codes:
P1031 - A/F Sensor 1 heater control circuit low

P0725 - Engine Speed signal circuit

But they might have been from me unplugging sensors.

Someone mentioned it sounds like it is running in 'Limp Mode' and I should try to reset/clear the ecu.

Took it back to the dealership and they claimed it was fixed but did the same thing a couple of days later. Turns out it was the temperature sensor. Seems Nissan has a protective feature that when the sender senses a engine overheat, it automatically tirns the engine off. Can't say this will fix your car but its worth checking out.

When I turn the key to the on position, all instrument lights stay on.

Battery, oil, brake etc.

It will only fire when cam sensor is plugged in and crank is unplugged. Wont start if crank is plugged in and cam is unplugged.

Seems odd since part of a recall was to reprogram the ECM to use the other sensor if one died.

Even when it does start, its not driveable. It will idle, but if I put it in gear and try to drive, it goes like 3 miles an hour no matter how far i press the accelerator.

No, that is a different system.

You meed to diagnose why you have no spark when the sensors are all plugged in and yet you get spark back when you unplug one sensor. I would verify the sensors have the correct ohms values and are not open or shorted to ground.

I changed spark plugs just because it needed it anyway. Everything plugged in as normal, tried to start, just cranks.

I sprayed starter fluid into intake tube, nothing. Pulled spark plugs one and two, laid them next to engine metal, cranked and no spark.

one odd issue is when I had a helper turn the key to 'ON' without cranking and then turn it off, I heard a weird "electronic" noise from behind the engine, sounded like it was coming from, or behind the cabin wall.

The only way I can describe it is a very light 'screeching' noise, but it fluctuates, like a fax machine noise but much softer.

fuel pump works, or it doesn't.

granted it *could* be an ecm, they do intermittant also....but after years of nissan main relay failures and rarely an ecm, well....math is ?

That's only a possibility if they have no fuel pressure. The OP needs to diagnose if they have no spark or no fuel at the engine when it is not starting while turning over.

There is a replacement sensor only from Nissan that is metal/metal tipped to correct the no start issue if you have no spark. You also need to verify fuel pressure. It can be either the sensors or the fuel pump. No gas or no spark as either will prevent the engine from running.

and found a rare few forum topics of people with different cars not being able to crank unless the sensor was disconnected, and the typical response was that there might be something wrong with the camshaft (not just the sensor!) and/or voltage/connection issue of the sensors.

Crank Sensor and it starts. I tried to drive it with crank sensor unplugged, but when I press the throttle, car doesnbt
respond. It sounds like engine RPM's go up a little, but no increase in speed.

Crank and Cam Sensor changed.
Nissan has told me that according to VIN, the ECM was already re-programmed due to a recall.
Security light does not come on when trying to start.
