[HN9000] Back on Hughesnet after 4 years sat-free ... (sigh)

My, how some things change and some don't...

Had the service from '02-'08... but I have to say that even with all the newfangled equipment... it hasn't gotten any better... actually worse!

Only been back on since 3 days... and other than the price/plan/fees being what they were under the "Hughes Recovery Act", I wouldn't have come running back.

My daytime connection gets "interrupted" at least 8-12x a day, usually something to do with Uplink issues... (and this is with a 91 signal!)

The frequent outages are much worse with this new HNS9200, than with the old DW4000 USB modem, and I'm not on the great sat I had 4 yrs ago. Plus, they put up yet another dish in my yard pointing somewhere else.

It's hard to believe that they only upped the FAP limit by 80MB in 4 years.
With all of the internet now linking to videos and tons of content, I'm eating up MB's like PacMan.

I do have to say on the positive side that there now is "rollover" from previously unused MB's from the day before, and now... finally... they have unlimited downloading from 2AM-7AM, which works great for torrenting huge files.

They really need to update the FAP limit to like 2GB/day if they want to stay competetive.

Yeah, I have a 3G phone with a grandfathered real, true, unlimited data plan. (d/l'd 16GB last month), but... that is coming to an end in December, when we will forced to buy a new phone and a new plan with limited d/l capabilities (e.g. the reason for getting sat.). not to mention burning through batteries from that kind of usage.

Anyway, just wondering if you all who have had HNS during the past 5 years, and/or evolved to the new equipment are having...
LESS, THE SAME, or, MORE problems now than before.

Thanks,
Wulffie.

a signal of 91 is terrible. you should be getting a signal of at least 150

I agree with chances14 that if you signal is only 91 than you have a big problem as the 9000 should have a much higher signal, mine averages around 189 - 192. The installer should come back out and get this fixed.

Really?
At the risk of sounding ignorant, the installer told me that that was a "typical signal strength" for our area. *shrug*. In all honesty I thought the signal strength was a percentage! *laugh*. (As you can see from my signature, which I have to update, the previous strongest signal strength was 85. I usually had between 68-85 with the old DW4000).
My issue now is that the service interruptions are worse now, than then.
(So far no interruptions today, 8/16).
I've been going through all the screens in the Advanced section of the "service area", and can't find numbers that I see in some postings like "Normalized Power Word" etc. I used to be able to find which sat I was pointed to, but I can't seem to find it, in the plethora of links about the sat. My eyes glaze over after the 10th screen or so... so I might have missed it.

About my location: I live in the woods, 120 ft. trees all around me. My initial install (2002), the sat was pointed to G11. There was hole between the trees that gave me a clear shot to the sky. My old dish was at 38 degrees elevation, however he said that this one was at 40+ degrees and appears to be pointing at the top of one of the dead trees, which wouldn't block much of the signal.

My initial installer (2002) plugged some kind of device into the sat. that looked like a meter of some kind, and was "fine tuning" the signal.
I didn't see a similar device being used this time. He seemed to be rushed at the end of the install, initially putting in the wrong sat. info into the setup screen, then changed it all at the last second. Didn't give we a warm fuzzy...

If you have any info about what/where in the System Info screen would help determine if everything is configured/pointed properly, I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks,
Wulffie.

So are you sure you are on HN9000 which is Spaceway or do you have HNS7000? If you have a 7000 than your signal is good, if you have a 9000 than you probably won't be able to connect. The 9000 only has one satellite and that is Spaceway.

ahh yes, i just noticed that you have the 9200 instead of the 9000. 9200 has a different set of signal values than the 9000.

so yes, your signal is fine

my apologies

No prob. All the equipment is new to me, so all the familiarity with using the previous interface is gone, and I have to re-learn everything.
I didn't know there was any big diff. bet. the 9000 and 9200. I looked at the 9000 manual, and it is different.

This is all I found about my sat. location:

Anyone know what sat (e.g. Satmex5, G14), I'm pointing to?
With the dual band sat. (Ku & KA), I don't know which band I'm on.

Thanks again for your help.
