is it possible to create a bootable windows DVD?

Essentially, what I'd like to do is install windows (2k, XP or 7) into a HD, install a few programs, and when I satisfied with the system, copy everything onto a DVD, and then boot from said DVD from that point on. Is this doable? If yes, how?

If write access is needed, some files can be copied into a ramdrive.

If you satisfied with your current setup, you may copy everything into DVD (they called it backup). Then install a new system, run it, make a new backup copy, etc. Later on when you need to run one of the your backups - restore them on HD and boot from there. But you can't run them from read-only media. Windows doesn't allow it. And I doubt that you can run it (boot) from a ramdrive too.

That sucks...

I have an i-RAM, and that's the backup plan.

Win-PE or Bart-PE are the closest thing as there isn't really a Windows Live CD or DVD like you are talking about.

I use VMWARE to create a stable base image of an OS.

I can then clone it as necessary to test new applications, or as my needs change.

Will take a look at these to see if they work for me.

The goal is to create a system that is inherently impervious to any type of attack, malware, virus, operator error, etc.

One solution I came up with is to install everything onto an i-RAM, make an image of it with ghost, copy that image onto a DOS bootable DVD. After booting DOS from said DVD a batch file would re-image the i-RAM with Ghost, and then restart the system. This should work, but it's quite a few steps, plus the i-RAM can and do retain it's content, so I may also need to wipe it.

You don't have to accomplish that operationally, there are products that do it. Faronics Deep Freeze is one of the oldest around, there was also a Microsoft tool called Windows Steady State but it was discontinued. Some alternatives are cited here »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi ··· adyState

Maybe I'll try that first. However, personally, I have much more trust in a HW based solution. If I have a DVD in a drive that is not write capable, there's simply no way that the boot image can be modified. On the other hand, with a SW based solution there can be exploits, bugs, operator error, booting from another device, etc.

Your DVD does not boot up a Live OS. It only boots an installer.

Yes it does suck. A read only OS is what the world has begged forever for. The problem is that it would deprive Microsoft a very primary revenue stream. WINDOWS ROTT !!
