| [Help] 2005 avalanche power problem? Ok got a weird one happening to the avalanche. approx. 2 week ago on a friday I watched the following happen.
• battery charge exceed the 19v (highest gage rating) and kept going. my guess is maybe 22-25 volts
• "service airbag" light came on.
Voltage steadily went back down and the airbag light went off. Nothing for as least four more days. Then...Rinse, lather, repeat. It did it again. Since then the "service airbag" light stays on now and is lit. Battery charge has recovered. When it happened the first time auto-zone tested the battery and the alternator and told us both were fine. Yesterday I dropped it off at the mechanic and best I could tell them was "voltage problem"
Any ideas on what is going on? -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. Koetting Ford, Granite City, illinois... YOU'RE FIRED!!

Many things. First, as a side note, I wouldn't recommend taking my vehicle to auto-zone for anything. But that's just me....
On your issue, a complicating factor is whether or not the gauge readings you were seeing were accurate or not. Sometimes the factory instrument cluster can fail in odd ways, and the way you describe is one of them. It will take some investigation for the tech to determine what the actual problem is, especially if it is not acting up when they look at it. Hopefully there will be some historic data in the computer system to give them a place to start. If not, expect to bring it back another time when it is giving you the trouble.
That's one of the downsides to electrical diagnosis. If it isn't actually in the failure mode, it can be difficult to impossible to locate the problem.
Possibilities are many-- alternator failure, wiring issue such as a loose connection or corroded connector, a wire partially rubbed through and touching ground intermittently, a failure within the cluster itself, and more.

If the voltage actually did get that high, then anything is possible with the electrical components in the vehicle. So short answer, is yes.

| reply to David Well the mechanic called, seems the cluster panel is going out in the truck (cause the battery and altenator are charging fine, but the guage is way, way off. That and the Air bag sensor is due to the right front impact sensor is defective.
All in all about about 1/2 grand all together with labor and parts. |
