Re: Wipe/format a Hard Drive

How long do these wiper programs take to erase big HDD? Let's say a 1 TB size? I hope they don't take many hours and days!

»Re: A factory install to make unrecoverable old data?

From the link in that.

quote:
Time Required: It could take several minutes to several hours to write zeros to a hard drive via the format command

For a 1TB drive I'd guess many many hours.

Oh, nope. I didn't. Thanks. Darn, hours?

Dban crashes right away when wiping. :(

So I finally tried my burned bootable burned CD-RW Dban program on the old PC's SATA HDD. It crashed right away on /dev/sd* drives. It mentioned logs, but where are they and how do I get to them? Maybe it crashed because of the encrypted HDD (PGP)? I don't know why. I gave up and did a factory reinstall from Dell's DVD since I was out of free time to work on this more. I also deleted all partitions except the Dell one. I hope that's enough!

What I've done, even recently, is to use the Windows Format command with the /p switch to zero the drive. I've even booted off a Windows DVD and used the "repair your computer" option to get to a command line so the format command can be used.

I keep a number of bootable DVD's/ISO's/USB stick's around for doing just this kind of thing

(Has links to downloadable ISO images)

FYI you can boot off a Win7/Vista DVD and get to Win2K/XP/etc installations. I do it all the time. That said when you get to the screen that shows Windows installations, and that is blank (Win2K/XP aren't recognized), just hit the next button.

dban crashed a lot on me as well. Try just doing the auto, that seemed to work for me.

OK, I will try that next time if I run into that problem again since I already got rid of the machine.

DBAN works best if you go in to your BIOS on your system and switch the SATA operation to legacy or if that's not an option IDE or if that's not an option at the worst AHCI. That should help.

Also DBAN can do a single pass on a 1TB drive in about 3 hours, I prefer 3 passes so I just let it run overnight.

Re: Wipe/format a Hard Drive

If you have a Linux liveCD laying around (any will do). Boot into it, open a shell as root. Type the following:

dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda bs=1M

where sda is the disk you want to overwrite. If you have more than one disk, be sure to select the correct one!

if you are using something different than the standard windows format than what kind of data recovery is the average person going to use to try and revive files?

unless it's some sort of government/intelligence agency who got ahold of the drive.

i wouldn't worry about it.

Try CCleaner. It's free and it had a feature to wipe drives.
