Leaking pipeI found a leaking pie in my house today. It is from a joint in the big black pipes made to take water out to the main sewer line. The leak is coming from a u joint that is just above the downstairs bathroom and is accessible. It seems that the leak is coming from the seal on the pipe. Is there a way to replace the seal with out removing the pipe. It is not a huge leak just a minor drip now. If the pipe should be replaced, how do you do it? I am not real knowledgeable but if shown how I think I could mange. The pipe is black in color if that gives you a reference and by downstairs I mean in the basement. |

Is the pipe plastic or iron? |

The pipe is PVC and around 2-3 inches in diameter. It carries water to the main sewer lines. Looks like there is a cap to access it further along the pipe. No pic sorry. |

said by Me on iphone : No pic sorry. You have an iPhone but you can't take a pic? No way to help if we don't know what you are talking about. Figure a way to take some pics and I'm sure we can give you some good advice. Otherwise, it's a crap shoot. |

I am staying with my mom for now. She had surgery and only get home about one or two times a week. I also work 2 jobs so I was in a rush to get out and back to business. The pipe looks like the one in the pic but with more branches. It is like the elbow joint that comes off the "plumbing tree" but is about an inch or so smaller in diameter. It is leaking near the connection to the main pipe. It is one of those leaks that barley runs. I just want to stop it before it becomes a problem. |

Go to Lowes or HD and get a plastic weld epoxy. I've had great luck with one (can't remember the name) that comes in a syringe and is heat activated (you can use a hair drier and heat until it's HOT). There is also a putty type epoxy that works very well. I've had good luck with this one: » www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N ··· RlqPl-j1 |

Do you have good access to that area where the leak is? Will you be able to work on it with minimum difficulty? |

Is it one of the joints I have marked with numbers (1,2,3)?

JBWeld is also almost indestructible, and it's a DWV it's under minimal pressure at most. |

2 and the leak is at the bottom of the collar. The collar is not broken at all to my visual inspection. It just felt like the sealant that was used has eroded there and it needs to be resealed. If I have to take it off. I would like instructions on how to do it if not I hope I can just clean up the area and reseal it. The sealant stuff is all around the collar and about an inch and a half up the pipe itself. Same stuff is around all the other collars too. |

Are you sure that's where the leak is? If water were leaking down from above, that's where it would end up. |

I'm sure. I watched it drip and the areas above it are dry and dusty. |

Umm there is a pick. I said it was number 2 and the leak is just on the bottom of the collar. The pipe looks exactly like the one in the pic as far as #2 goes. What more do you want? |

First off, the piping is ABS, not PVC. There are no 'seals' as such (ABS is solvent-weld) so your inability to use the proper terminology at the outset is why we asked for a pic of YOUR installation.
So get a short piece of that (can be scrap), make some cuts in it and gather up the cuttings. Crush the cuttings up more so the particles are fine.
Mix those particles with some ABS glue. Mix until it becomes like a paste. Apply that to the cleaned and dry area of the leak. Let that set up and apply more glue to the area. Be careful when doing this.
Since the leak is small and the pipe is not under pressure then this might solve the problem.
If not, just saw all the necessary pieces out and rebuild it exactly as it was. |

What difference would a pic of MY pipe do? It looks exactly like the pipe elbow that is labled 2 and you wouldn't be able to see the leak because it is so small. I also told my predicament in the thread where I am staying with my mom to take care of her etc. so if you can't figured it out from all that I don't know what to tell you. |

It doesn't make any difference if you have a picture as long as you can adequately describe your problem. Sometimes it is easier for people if you do have a picture, but if you don't then we will just have to work around that. |

I don't think you know where the leak is. If you post some good pics that give context to this particular pipe then we may be able to give better advice in finding the leak. It is extremely unlikely that the leak is actually where you describe it to be. |

Umm I think I am smart enough to see the water dripping and to trace the pipe to see if it is coming from above. Like I said already the pipes all around are dusty and dry and all can see all the way to the floor above. I also checked the sink above the area and no drips there. I also checked the area where the drip is. ( The pipe is eye level with me) So yes the leak is there where I said. |

Would I need sandpaper to clean it? If so what grit? I do have some glue and some scrap pipe. If I replace it are there any couplings etc that I might need? |

said by jsouth:If I replace it are there any couplings etc that I might need? Answering that question, without guessing, is just about impossible without pictures. Why are you so reluctant to take a picture? You ask here for help, you are asked for clarification (picture or two) and you refuse. Do you really want help, or not? COOPERATE. |

Ok for those who haven't or can't read the whole thread. I haven't had a chance to get home to take a pic of the pipe. Because I work 2 jobs and I am taking care of my mother who has had surgery. Like I said I only get home once or twice a week now. I wish I could get home to get a pic but the example while have to do for now. The pipe is just like the elbow (#2) in the sample. The leak is at the bottom of the elbow where it connects to the other pipe. The pipe doesn't look cracked it just seems like the sealant is missing from a less than 1/2 inch spot at the bottom of the collar where the two pipes are joined together. All the other pipes are dry and dusty and I checked above also. That is where the leak is coming from. It only leaks and very slowly and intermittently I might add when the sink right above it is ran. Yes I did watch for falling water. Both pipes are black and Abs plastic. Just like he sample pic. So don't tell me to cooperate if you can't read the whole thread first. |
