Re: Wii U

I got mine on Monday. It's very cool! My kids (6 and 3) love playing Super Mario U, and Nintendo Land.

Super Mario U is pretty much what you expect of a Mario game, it reminds me of a cross between Super Mario World - SNES, and Super Mario - Wii.

Nintendo Land is a very fun, family friendly game. There are approximately 10 mini games within the game. We've only played three of them so far but each is a lot of fun. So far our favorite is Mario Chase. The first player uses the large controller, and up to 4 others can play using a wii remote. It's simple, player run has to run away and hide from the other players while they chase him/her. It's good fun and provides some really good laughs.

I also picked up ZombieU for myself. I played about three hours so far and I really like this game. It reminds me of the feeling I had when I first played Resident Evil on Playstation. I like the added features with the controller, it contains your backpack, your map, a radar to detect undead, and some other game functions. My only complaint so far is how dark the game is, but I imagine that leads to part of the genres environment.

Nintendo should have applied the 3DS tech onto the Gamepad screen. This could have been cool, or very irritating

The little time I've spent playing this, doesn't really scream next gen gaming to me. Nintendo is usually great at breaking the mold and creating innovation. Just looks like they mashed the handheld DS and Wii into one system. Not complaining, but just hoping the next Nintendo in 5 years or so really stretches the imagination.

Thanks for the info. I haven't kept up with the Wii U release or info. I honestly didn't know the Wii U came out today until I strolled into Target.

My wife has since taken over the TV and been playing games most of the evening...

LOL!!!

That might be because Wii u 'tvii' app (The main controlling piece for the wii u's harmony features) won't be out until december.

Yep. Exactly right!

The Wii U GamePad can also be used as a universal television remote with a built in guide, even when the Wii U is off. This will allow users to use the Wii U GamePad as a means to switch television inputs, browse through channels, look through channel programming guides, and turn the Wii U console on.

Boy I was really looking forward to this feature but it's pretty much useless and not something I would leverage. It's totally basic and pretty much only changes the channel and volume. Perhaps I was expecting too much.

I GOT MINE!!!!!!

32GB Deluxe Version!!!

Loving how sleek and sexy it looks. The controllers seems a lot more responsive, and have a nicer look/feel to them. Went through the initial setup and am currently doing the massive system update.

Ha me too. There were actually plenty in stock out here. I didn't have to wait in line, and went to a local Best Buy and purchased the deluxe around 1pm with 3 or 4 still in stock behind the counter.

I've played 1 game so far and it was pretty neat. The system is updating once again...

Let's put this into perspective though.

The entry-level 360 back then didn't have any internal storage at all. And only now, would using a standard flash drive provide any possible way to store save data of any kind, much less support installed games. And you still needed a hard drive to play any xbox 1 titles. The current entry-level 360 comes with 4GB of flash memory, which by the same standard is even worse, since now some demos are as big as 2gb's a piece.

While the base 'super slim' PS3 has a 250GB hard drive here, anyone using PS Plus would find about 100GB's of that just gone with the 'rental' games that it provides. And that's only here in the states. In other regions, the 'starter' super slim PS3 actually only comes with 12GB's of storage. And what's worse about it is that this edition may need a separate adapter to install more storage at all. This doesn't even take into account the severe dis-jointment of functionality since the launch models, that started with 20 or 60gb's of disk space.

As it is now, there just isn't that much stuff available for WiiU to warrant having that much of a huff about its factory storage. And the Wii at first also didn't support storing download games or such on SD card... it took a firmware update a few years down the line before that was possible. And for 512MB's of internal storage, that has somehow remained viable for quite a while for me. Not great, but without said updates from Nintendo, I probably would have been doing far worse.

Here is the article I was talking about.

Like others have stated, you shouldn't have to go out and buy additional storage for a console. It's the year 2012 and if you want to compete with Sony and Microsoft you should supply a big enough hard drive.

Hell, you can even get a 64GB SD Card if you don't want to go the way of the External HD.There are so many options.

How much you wanna bet you see people start cracking the Wii U open and upgrading the HD on their own, the same way they were doing with the PS3's and XBOX 360's? Nothing different there either, so I don't see what the issue is.

Don't want the 8GB version, spend the extra $50 to get the 32GB version. Simple.
Want the 8GB version, then spend a little more for external storage. Simple. It was the same thing with the other consoles, so I don't know why it being spun as if Nintendo really dropped the ball with this.

Because it's not spin and they obviously did. It's not 2005 anymore, and even then it definitely is not the same thing on the other consoles. Both Microsoft and PS3 have options to where you don't have to spend any extra money on something as integral to the console as sufficient memory if you don't want to. Even with the 32gb version, not much more than one AAA game will fit.

Frankly it looks to me like they are still counting on the relative technological inexperience of their base, who since the Wii tend to be the more casual players and probably wouldn't know a digital download or DLC if it fell out of the sky, landed on their face and started to wiggle. Which is fine if they're fine with the casual only crowd. But I thought they wanted to get more core gamers back into the fold and this certainly isn't the way. A /facepalm for sure.

I consider myself a core gamer, but I also hate digital content, and would much rather have a physical copy of the game. For the most part, I just don't trust digital. And while yes, something could happen to my physical copies, those are something I could always replace in the end for a substantially reduced price on the used game market if I ever needed to. I just don't trust digital content providers to continue providing their product indefinitely. So while the lack of space for digital downloads doesn't necessarily bother me for that reason, I do think that telling people they're getting an 8 gig hard drive but having it immediately filled with 4 gigs of stuff is bad practice. I can't imagine if the 8 gig iPod Touch my daughter has had come that way - I'd have been beyond angry.

I assume they are just using the space for save games and not for DL as of yet. It will fit fine with just the 32GB and playing from a disk. It is shortsighted to not not think about add ons and direct purchases but maybe they saw it as another opportunity to get a new peripheral. Because we all know Nintendo is all about getting you to buy extra stuff for the systems. I'm sure that the smaller drives also helped in keeping the system from being as expensive as a PC.

All true enough. I do think it's shortsighted when they announce most of their games will be available in digital format but don't actually include enough memory to download many. I thought of the 'keeping it inexpensive' angle too but really...memory is cheap these days, and it's got to be even cheaper wholesale. I agree with you; I'll bet we'll see a Nintendo licensed external hard drive or other memory peripheral shortly after launch.

I don't know, if the quotes in the post above yours are accurate about how much space the default system comes with, and just how much one game install is, that really doesn't fly in my book. Assuming, of course, that's accurate. The idea that people should necessarily be expected to buy more storage is so Gamecube/PS2. The basic model should provide for the average gamer's experience. The big question is, does New Super Mario Brothers U actaully *require* a full 2GB, or is that 2GB an optional install that functions like the Xbox 360's install-to-hard-drive option? I wouldn't mind so much if that's an install option, but if the average game does take up that much space just to play it, that's annoying.

In the context of the story I think that 2 GB is the size of the entire game if you were to download it instead of buying a store copy, not install + disk size. So downloading their games digitally, which they have said will be available, isn't going to be much of an option on either system unless you spend more money elsewhere.

Of course the Xbox 360 has a 4 gb model for people to play exclusively off of disks, and the same could be said for the WiiU. My concern is that the 35gb model is the biggest they have; there's not an option for people who do want to get a lot of their content digitally without spending money on additional hardware.

Well, Nintendo doesn't WANT you buying the 8GB version anyway, they want you to buy the "better" deal.

That said though, seeing it full after one game kinda sucks. I don't download much in the way of games, I prefer hard copies, at least until it's CHEAPER to get the digital versions.

They should make it that you can copy discs to the hard drive. It preserves the optical, and improves performance. "But that will instigate piracy!" you say? Perhaps, but nothing stops them from implementing an "Insert disc to verify" every 20 plays or so option in the system. Don't have the disc (i.e. you rented it) it uninstalls, or is unplayable. Simple enough solution to me. I think that should be on ALL systems.
