dewalt batteries/chargers

Please can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the small connecting jaws between the main contacts on this charger? It would appear to contact the centre tap contact on these batteries which does not get connected on the normal slow chargers supplied with the tools. Is it anything to do with the auto rerfesh or hot/cold delay? This small centre-tap contact is also present in Black & Decker batteries of a similar type although differently positioned. Thanks in advance for any info:

Without any specifics my guess is that it is used to sense battery temperature during charge.

It sounds like a balanced charger. At least, with Li-Po they charge them individually although they are connected in series.
