| [motherboard] Dell Optiplex 390 I was gifted a Dell Optiplex 390 that allegedly took a lightning strike. When you power it up, the fans and such come on, but no post.
I'm assuming the motherboard or the processor is toast.
Can I shoehorn a MiniATX board in this case, or am I stuck having to buy Dell's parts. I found an board on eBay, »www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-OptiPlex-3···c9b883c3
I wanted to build this system into a low end gaming rig for my older son (who plays Minecraft). I just dropped $800 on my new system build, so I am trying to do this one on the cheap. -- "F is for Fire that burns down the whole town... U is for Uranium...... Bombs... N is for NO SURVIVORS!!!!!" Before you go further, have you removed all unnecessary devices to eliminate other possible problems?
1. DVD/CD drives, 2. Hard drives, 3. Solid state drives. 4. Sound card. 5. Modem card 6. Networking card 7. All but 1 stick of memory. 8. External video card if there is on-board video
All of these are not need to pass POST and enter your bios.
Also, be sure that the obligatory 4 (sometimes 6 or 8) PIN 12V CPU plug is plugged into the MB.
If still doesn't pass POST clear the CMOS and try again. |

| Strangely, I didn't disconnect any of those. DOH!
It doesn't have any cards.. Sound, video, and networking are all integrated.
I will have to go do this and see what happens. I was told it took a strike through the Ethernet port. -- "F is for Fire that burns down the whole town... U is for Uranium...... Bombs... N is for NO SURVIVORS!!!!!" Sheldon Plankton

I agree, the board is fried, CPU can be OK however. I’d start there. Hope PSU is in working condition too, lightning can do damage. Good luck. |

| This works for me. I will have to look, but I think the I/O plate is removable.
I have a backup ATX power supply that I keep around the house for testing. A 500w Antec. I swapped that into the system with no luck.
I could drop the CPU (a Intel Core i3) into my new system I just built, but I don't want to risk damaging my new system with a bad CPU.
I will try resetting the CMOS, and unhooking the drives, but I think the board is done.

| What sucks is the computer came with a Windows 7 Pro license. With the motherboard gone, it's no longer a Dell, so the license is no longer valid....
I was referring to the i3 possibly being bad, and damaging my new system (Which has a MSI board in it.) |

| Well, did some checks on the system. Pulled SATA cables, and both memory sticks off.. I get POST error code.
Put one stick in, fans come up, but no video. Swap sticks, same thing.
I hate to, but I need to test everything in this box before I buy a new motherboard. So looks like I am going to have to pull my new system apart, swap in the ram, test it. I hate to swap processors, cause then I have to re-goop my HSF. -- "F is for Fire that burns down the whole town... U is for Uranium...... Bombs... N is for NO SURVIVORS!!!!!" Sheldon Plankton
