Based on the per customer cost in the Sandwich Isles project, it will cost taxpayers $259.5 billion ($259,517,279,800) for service to the 19,000,000 households not presently served with broadband internet.
Somehow I think we can do better. One good start would be to let villages, cities and counties build out their own infrastructure with the USF money. Then, they could lease the infrastructure to any ISP who wants to serve the area. If no ISP takes the offer within 90 days, the political subdivision could roll out their own service using local funding.
It's not unlike building highways to attract and further economic development, only this would be an information highway.
