What is your budget? Also how much do you want to take risk into account?

As said, budget is key. What's the weather like there this time of year?

Insure it and your risk is zero... financially at least.

for nikon, i'd just get the 18-200 VR lens ($847). very versatile without having to swap lens. I recommended it to a coworker who went on safari to kenya and he liked it a lot.

For body either D7000 (16.2MP, $997) or D5100 (16.2MP, $547) body only. There's also the D3200 (24MP) which is relatively new $697 kit.

cheaper alternative to the 18-200 is to get the kit lense w/ any of the 3 bodies above and get the 55-200 VR ($246)

btw, only recommending nikon since OP has previous exp with Nikon. There are always other options as well.

Sort of what I was going for, but the cost of that insurance has to be factored in to the budget question.

Also, it's not "zero" financially speaking, as if you have to make a claim you are likely to find rates go up if you need to take out such insurance in the future.

If the areas you are visiting have dusty environs you may also want to check out equipment that has good environmental sealing. Of course that comes with a price.

grendal's recommendations are good. I'd go with a do-all focal length lens so you don't have to remove it while you're out and about. If you get a bunch of dust on the sensor you're not going to be happy. The 18-200 is a good choice, though it's not inexpensive.

There's also the Tamron 18-270 for less (including a $100 MIR): »www.bhphotovideo.com/c/p ··· _II.html

What camera to get would depend on your budget.

I understand the 18-200mm, but what about taking the 18-55 and a 70-300mm... I feel that at the zoo, 200mm isn't enough reach...

18-270 would be a good compromise.

200 is actually not too bad for the zoo, as with a crop sensor it is a 300 equivalent.

since I'm not a pro - I'd want to stay on a budget / economical range - and it is not my priority so there is a chance of me mishandling it / ruining it ... losing/theft of it...

If you want weather sealing and more control, check out the Pentax K-30 and some of the weather sealed lenses (18-55, 18-135, 16-50, 50-135, 60-250).
