[Rant] Tiger Direct - A Headach or a Scam?

I called TD about a defective computer I got, but the customer service rep said that first I had to get a “case number” from the company that sold TD that computer, a company called U.S. Micro. But when I called USM, they wouldn’t answer their phones or call me back. The one time someone answered, I was told that the person I needed to talk to was “on another line” but would get the message to call me back. But no one at USM ever called me back. I even sent them emails, but no one ever responded to them.

That might sound like back luck, except for this: TD has a 30- return policy. USM dodged contact with me for months, and, as a result, the return policy expired. And I got stuck with that computer.

So, is it just a coincidence that, with these defective products:
(A) TD created the requirement that their customers get a “case number” from TD’s business associate,
(B) That the customer has to get that “case number” to TD within 30 days,
(B) And that TD’s business associate dodges contact with the customer for over that period of time?

As long as TD and USM can wait out the 30-day return period, they win. TD can continue to sell those defective products to customers and then just wait while USM dodges calls. In the end, they each end up making money, and the customers lose.

Tiger got embroiled a few years back for rejecting virtually all rebate claims. My BIL swears by them, but I'm more hesitant.

I have used circuitcity.com which is tigerdirect to get no sales tax on the TV I bought. I had no issues.

Tigetdirect has been around since the 90s and they still survive, but they always have had bad issues with customer service. If something goes wrong with the item TigerDirect is a pain in the ass.

TD claims the manufacture is setting the exchange requirements. I find this odd as no other store does this.

If you followed the #1 rule of internet purchases is use a real credit card (debit cards do not count) then you can just do a chargeback and be done with this mess.

I bought my 3DTV from Tiger. A $3,600 TV, that cost me $1,800, free shipping, no tax. Any company that can save me upwards of $2,000 on a single purchase will most definitely get my support in the future, and recommendations to others. Also bought a 5.1 speaker set up through them and always check Tiger first before ordering my electronic toys. Sometime Amazon is better, sometimes Tiger's better.

I stopped using TigerDirect years ago when I didn't get my item I bought for 2 months, they claim their computer crashed which I find strange you sell computer stuff and you don't know how to fix them!
Amazon comes first then Newegg!

File a dispute with your credit card company. Explain that the product was defective and the merchant refused to honor their return policy. I guarantee the credit card company will refund your money. You'll probably get to keep the defective computer, too.

Headsche or scam?

Does sound like a headache to say the least.

Personally, I live very close to the Tiger warehouse in Naperville and have been going to them for 15+ years. Occasionally I will have items shipped to me as they always arrive next day. I do this if I just don't have the time to drive there.

My experience has been mostly positive. I have had items shipped to me that I needed to return and just took them back to the store myself and they were returned no problem.

They are by far the cheapest when it comes to PC components. I remember back in the day going to get 56k modems for like 3 bucks when Best buy sold them for like 50 bucks. But I digress.

The only complaint I ever had was with the staff in the store. Most all of them were such super nerdy geeks that they could not relate to customers and would only just further confuse someone that needed help.

At least one, if not the other.

I won't use TD because of their history with shady business practices, and making it hard to find what exactly is the price.

Newegg is reputable and I've never had problems with them.

If you have a record of your first warranty call to TD (date/time and rep you spoke to) then stick to your guns. You initiated the claim before the 30-day limit. If they refuse to cooperate dispute with your credit card company.

99% of my online shopping goes to Newegg, Amazon or B&H Photo Video.

I don't even bother shopping around much because the couple dollars (max) is almost NEVER worth it with most retailers.

I never used B&h photo so I can not say any thing about them. I ordered a dash kit from Amazon which showed and said that it came with the LCD screen. When It arrived it did not have the lcd screen. So I might not dealing with Amazon again. So far Newegg has been ok.

How about neither. I've had nothing but good service from TD. Stuff I buy shows up on time, and usually works, and for a long time... When my refurb'd HP system didn't come with the advertised wireless keyboard, they offered to pony up a new third-party wireless keyboard to make it right.

I turned them down, used the HP warranty instead.

You "PHONED" Tiger Direct and someone actually picked up the phone? Amazing. Anytime I've tried to make a call to the Tiger Direct store in Markham, Ontario... they NEVER answer their damn phones. I honestly don't know why they even have a phone system which allows customers to talk to tech support or to connect with a sales associate because they never pick up. Perhaps this is not the case at other locations... but in Markham... they need to disconnect their customer phone system altogether because right now it serves little to no use to the general public. Don't get me wrong, I love Tiger Direct with all the great hard to find products that are not available at other stores in my area. I wouldn't care so much about their phone support if I lived closer to a Tiger Direct location, so when I need to inquire about a products availability... I know I'm not going to have much luck connecting to the Markham store via telephone.

I ordered my graphic card from them, and I got a good price and the card showed up 4 days later and I have been happy with it.

I mostly buy from Newegg, but that week, TD had a better price so I tried them.

Haven't had a problem, so I can't comment on their customer service.

Never any issues with Amazon or Newegg. I even get Newegg to give me a shipping label on returns, even though most people eat the shipping cost if the item is defective.

Never shopped with B&H Photo, although I would never trust anything out of Manhattan.

Used to shop with ZipZoomFly, but I forgot what they did to piss me off. Something with a return or re-stocking fee.
