MasonSaceurPremium join:2006-01-06 | WildBlue Usage Suddenly Skyrockets ...and the only change at home is the installation of an AppleTV, which is used only for airplay streaming from macbooks and ios devices.
Both download and upload are through the roof and 2 months in a row (for the first time since installing the service almost 3 years ago!) and I have gotten notices and been throttled once, resulting in the modem failing, a week without service and a tech coming out to replace the modem. Oh wait, he didnt have one that was NOT excede... so he had to beg one from another tech and then come back out again and install.
Anybody else still with WB and seen this nonsense? Its driving me batty. -- A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both. |

 | When you say you are only streaming from your computer & iGizmos, give us a couple examples of what you are streaming to the apple tv |

 | reply to Mason AppleTV can function as a peer-to-peer network device which probably explains your high upload usage. Watching video probably accounts for your high download usage. Stop using AppleTV for a month to see if your usage returns to normal. -- Wildblue Value Pack, beam 31, Riverside gateway |

MasonSaceurPremium join:2006-01-06 | reply to Mason I am not using the AppleTV to pull any data down via the internet. I use it to stream data via AirPlay from iOS devices and OSX devices on my LAN.
I suppose it is possible that the AppleTV is updating itself, playlists, available data were I to want to download via internet, I do not know, would like to know, though doubt that alone can explain the massive increase in downloaded and uploaded data.
Wildblue says it is iCloud syncing. No way. Ive been using that to sync contacts and calendar between a laptop, desktop, iphone and ipad for a year (since it was release) and only seen this massive upsurge in "usage" in the last two months.
I think they are forcing me to upgrade to Excede. I would gladly do so, but I am moving in 6 months. -- A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both. |

If your addition of the AppleTV was concurrent with the increase in usage it would appear that you could easily test whether it was the culprit by removing it for a period of time. -- Motosat self-pointing dishes: 1.2-meter XF-3 on 93W, .74 meter G74 on 127W, SL-5 HD DirecTV|idirect 3100|Hughes HN7000S|Verizon UMW190 Air Card|1990 Blue Bird Wanderlodge Bus "Blue Thunder"|Author of hnFAP-Alert, PC-OPI and DSSatTool |

Unexplaind intenet usage by my apple tv
Theoretically it is true that the usage of Apple TV to just stream music from your computer/iPod/iPhone should not use any internet, but in fact the opposite is true. In some way (and we still have to understand how) switching on Apple TV DOES send internet usage through the roof, although it SHOULD NOT. This is constantly happening to me.
It might automatically upgrade the software or load internet content in background, I have no idea about it, but obviously it is working using huge amounts in download.
So, people with limited caps, BEWARE...

 | reply to Mason If you have a firewall installed, set it to block AppleTV from uploading and downloading from the Internet. |
|
 | I didn't read that Apple TV thread posted, but I did notice there were configuration settings to switch on/off:
"Do you have a screensaver enabled? The one that loads up a Flickr stream for example. This chews data as it (pre?)loads images and displays them...."

 | reply to Mason I have a tv program season I bought and downloaded from iTunes on my computer When I watch it thru my ATV, it streams from apple not my computer
As an experiment, begin your airplay streaming and watch it for a short while, then unplug your internet connection however you want Any change in behavior?
Another experiment Before you begin an iCloud sync, unplug internet and see if you can sync |
