Are you sure that you always explicitly pinged "comcast.net"?

Things change... With today's CDN's you are probably being re-directed to different servers, some of which do not respond to ping. You are reading too much in to this !!! If you are not having issues then there is nothing wrong. The only thing that may be an issue is as gar187er  has stated, the downstream power is weak and the SNR is low, and if it fluctuates even farther out of spec then you can begin to have connectivity issues.
Also, pinging Comcast is basically meaningless unless you are spending your life at their portal. As some newbies may think, that is not where everything on the internet comes from. | |
