This sharing isn't as easy as it seems on the surface, some protocols present special challenges. For example, FTP may attempt to pass your computer's IP to the remote machine.

If the FTP transaction were left alone, the remote computer would receive 192.168.x.x, which is useless. It needs your public IP to reach you. So, a special algorithm is needed to tweak the FTP protocol and substitute your private IP for the public IP, and make a note of where the connection needs to go when the remote server attempts to contact you.

This is the "ftp alg". Other protocols need their own customized tweaking for similar reasons. Sometimes these "algs" can cause problems of their own. SIP needs special handling as well, but most VOIP providers will tell you disable it and forward ports instead. So, it's good to be able to disable these if they're not needed.
--
AT&T U-Hearse - RIP Unlimited Internet 1995-2011
Rethink Billable.

I work from home too and woke up this morning to find my internet not working. I checked the modem and noticed that the wireless indicator was now on, where it had been disabled in the past. To add to my confusion we had an earthquake overnight and I thought the settings may have reset to default with a power outage or something like that. So I logged into the modem and tried to follow the steps I had done to get it working in bridge mode when it was first set up but as soon as I disabled NAPT, all of the settings disappeared. Multiple resets later I was still getting nowhere and then I found this post. Again, thanks a ton!
