neonhomer posted : Well, the new stuff from Newegg showed today... and I went over and picked up a HSF for the system (a Zalman orb looking thingy). I also picked up 8 GB more RAM for my system.

So, motherboard, video card, processor, memory.. Uh... Houston, we have a problem...

The damn power supply doesn't have a 8 pin 12v connection, and has only one 6 pin video connection.

Luckily, the video card came with two adapters, so I used the one with the power supply, and then one of the adapters hooked to a molex to get power to the video. I had a 4pin 12v, so I plugged that into the motherboard.

The system is up and running, and has Windows 7 on it. I have to get a decent power supply, and a Windows 7 compatible Wifi adapter, but so far, it seems to be running good. My older son is playing Minecraft right now, with the settings on max, and loving it.
--
"F is for Fire that burns down the whole town...
U is for Uranium...... And from looking at their site.. they don't have much of nothing.... ugh....

Guess I am going to either have to go down and see what they have, or just order one from Newegg and wait a few more days..

Or just buy a new CPU w/ a HSF...
Refit time for son's PC...

neonhomer posted : My older son (10) has had to suffer with a older PC (A P4, 2.2GHz) that has integrated video, limited speed, etc etc...

Well, I picked up a newer Dell Optiplex that took a lightning strike through the NIC. Motherboard is toast.... Here are the salvageable parts:

Intel i3-2100 dual core processor
(2) 2GB sticks DDR3 1333 RAM
250GB Seagate SATA HD
DVD-R Drive (SATA)

I already have a power supply, a newer Antec 500W (24pin ATX, additional 12v and PCI-E connectors). I was going to try to use the old Dell case, but I would have to re-pin the lights and switches.

He plays web games, Minecraft, and uses the web for school work.

I want to build him a new system using the leftover parts from the Optiplex, with a little bit of a upgrade path.

So I guess I need a motherboard, case, and video card. I personally have the HAF 912, and that case is a bit much for my son's system. I just need a plain-ish case, but if it looks flashy, then cool. Video doesn't need to be hog wild, nVidia or ATI would be okay. Of course, a motherboard to match. I don't know if/when this system will be upgraded again. If I do, it will be mostly to a faster processor, or better video.

Budget - $300 (or so). From newegg.com would be fine, as I am not in a big hurry to get this system together (unlike my system, I needed it ASAP).
--
"F is for Fire that burns down the whole town...
U is for Uranium......
