3G versus 4G

Has anyone had first hand experience gaming using 3G and then upgrading to 4G?

I currently use 3G, since that is the best service available in my area. I now have 4G available thru another carrier. Should I pay to get out of an existing contract? I wanted to know if it is night and day difference as advertised.

Thanks

Yes it is night and day however I wouldn't use either unless you have an unlimited plan.

As I said. It's the only options for available service. I xbox nearly every night and seldom bump a 5 gig plan.

Thanks

4G is alot better than 3G if you have good coverage

Anyone have some real world 4G latency numbers?

You game and surf the internet and use less than 5 gigs a month? heck just yesterday we use 9.5 GB. So far today 3 GB.

If you're on Verizon you might check into their HomeFusion service. You can get 10 GB for $60 a month.

Yep surf, game, email, and the occasional youtube video. No movie streaming or internet TV. I wish we had such luxuries

I get around 50-75ms

I'm getting 70-100 on 3G. That doesn't seem like much of an improvement. How far are you from the tower.

50-75ms on 4G is MUCH better than 75-100ms on 3G.

I'm not exactly sure why everybody is saying 4G is a lot better than 3G for gaming.

If you have a very stable, consistent 3G connection now, you probably won't see much benefit of 4G unless the 4G tower is a lot closer than the 3G tower.

The primary factor in how well an online game performs is consistency in latency. I don't think 4G makes huge improvements in that area, but I could be wrong. The one possibility I could see is that 4G upload is much higher, so if you're doing anything else on the internet while playing a game, it won't affect your performance as much.

Yes, latency isn't everything - 4G allows you to receive more data in less time, but that's the opposite of how most online games operate.

This is exactly why I started the thread. Thanks for the info.
The previously mentioned improvement of 25ms is great from a network debate but I didn't really think it would be that important in the gaming world. Some carriers are claiming less than 10-25ms total latency on 4G but I haven't heard are seen any proof yet.

There is a night and day difference between 3G and 4G. It's like moving from DSL to a high speed Cable connection.

For throughput, yes. For latency? I haven't noticed much difference.

BTW, DSL is sometimes better for gaming than cable (assuming the upload is high enough)

I used to have DSL, and I moved to Cable years ago. No contest!

Again.. Throughput and latency are both aspects you need to consider. Of course 4G and cable have more throughput than 3G and DSL, respectively. Nobody is questioning that fact or even asking about it.

Latency on cable is normally higher than DSL, but the gap has closed significantly. Latency on 3G is already crappy, and I haven't seen any indications that it's better on 4G.
