Re: [AR] Modem Recommedation

Thanks for the response! They confirmed only TWO choices:
Moto: SB6180 or they may still have some 6120 or 6121 left.
Netgear: It's a gateway - we don't need that.

I'm leaning towards updating the FW first and go from there.

If it's a choice between the three Motorola, are there threads that have hashed out what the differences are and which are more stable? and

Is Cox selling the SB6121 WITH the optional power button?

Thanks again for all the help everyone!

You don't want a 612x modem.

At the Minimum get a 6180.

612x 4 downstreams... 6180 Or Cisco 3010 8 downstreams.

For those who do want an SB6121, I see that my local Costco has a bunch of them at $75 each.

As far as I know the standby feature is no longer offered on any modem. That was removed because people kept pushing and calling us for help getting online.

Got a call from my neighbor a couple of years ago. "Our Internet is out. Can you take a look?"

5 minutes later, "You see this button? Don't push that."

Could have been the SB5120 ?

Even more evil was the RCA modems that had an Internet on/off button instead of a standby. Standby would issue you a 192 IP address but the RCA's on/off switch would look exactly like a DHCP failure which is a very common problem people call support for. You had to be an extremely observant technician to have the presence of mind to ask the customer if the Internet light on the modem was on.

You're right. That was it - the RCA. She'd pushed the Internet button.

This is very unfortunate, and as usual, because a bunch of 'technologically challenged' individuals, they remove an excellent feature of this modem.
