 | [IL] Three Outages in 3 Weeks in Southern IL? What's going on? I'm in Marion IL and I'm in the middle of my third area-wide outage since Aug 16 (Aug 16, Aug 28, today, Sept 4). Why in the world would this one area be so prone to outages? Is it old or deteriorating equipment? Poor maintenance? This is my work connection, I can't have a day-long outage every week.
I guess I need some kind of reassurance that whatever problem they're having is being addressed long-term, otherwise I'll just cancel it. A service I can't depend on might as well be no service at all. |

 | Re: [IL] Three Outages in 3 Weeks in Southern IL? What's going o On twitter they've said it started with the Marion head end and stretches as far north as Jacksonville. With an ETR of 3 hours (posted an hour ago). It isn't normally this bad but luckly I'm close enough to the library that I can borrow their wifi.
Frontier offered me bonded dsl a couple weeks ago. The offer was for 12mbps for $50 and if they change the provisioning 25mbps for $60 but it was currently at 17mbps. Upload speeds were supposedly 2mbps.. If you cancel maybe Frontier would be an option. |

| reply to David Wong I have BOTH Mediacom and frontier with a Draytek dual wan router......Frontier is down just as much it seems, that is why I have both providers.......but I will say over the last 6 months Mediacom ping times have went through the roof......even though my frontier is only 7.1 it is much snappier than Mediacom |
|
 | reply to David Wong Six hours later, still down. So much for the 3-hour ETA. |

|
 | reply to David Wong Three fiber cuts in three weeks?
Seriously? |
|
 | reply to David Wong You guys who have more experience with this industry, is "fiber cut" just something they tell customers to make an outage seem like it's not their fault? Obviously lines don't get cut once every six days, does anyone have any idea what could really be going on here? |
|
 | Why doesn't mediacom have a fiber ring like other providers in the area. If one section gets cut traffic should be routed around the other way. It should take at least 2 cuts to bring down such a large area. Maybe you should buy a fiber path from Clearwave. Clearwave has a nice fiber ring and egress to both St.Louis and Chicago. |

 | reply to David Wong "Multiple systems interrupted across IN due to error in Gibson City facility. Techs are working to repair now. ETR ~3 hours." »twitter.com/MediacomSupport/stat···89817856
An hour after that was posted.. "@tadanglin I'm not sure on the particulars, but it's originating from the Marion, IL master headend. Techs have already begun repairs." »twitter.com/MediacomSupport/stat···09857025
It seems odd that a problem with a master headend in Marion happened just before a large fiber cut. Not sure I'm buying it at this point. |

Mediacom is always fixing fibers. Their service is great when working but worthless when you count on having the net day in, day out. |

| reply to David Wong In a related question... What is this planned upgrade for cdale? I found this on the Mediacom forums recently and was wondering if it's an uninteresting backend upgrade, or if Carbondale is finally getting the digital/105Mbps stuff?

 | reply to David Wong Don't look now, but it seems the internet is back up for now. |
|
 | reply to David Wong problem is someone like chad cant makeup for a company that cant deploy a fiber ring to keep crap like this from happening. Mediacom is a joke. I am asking my city to throw them out and let comcast buy the system as comcast has expressed interest in our market. |
|
 | reply to David Wong It's funny how each of these outages have seemed to start and get resolved at approx. the same time too... |

I am asking my city to throw them out and let comcast buy the system as comcast has expressed interest in our market. Everything I've heard about Comcast points towards that being a bad idea. I don't think I've heard more than a few people saying they are satisfied with Comcast...
Then again, I'm not their customer, I'm just basing this off of the countless times I've seen people complaining about them. |

 | had them for 6 years only one major outage. 100x better than mediacrap |

| reply to David Wong shit happens...besides its a residential service with no uptime guarantee so make sure you have a back up connection when working from home. Its not the end of the world. btw speaking of working from home dont call mediacom if your company does not allow VPN connection from the 50.x.x.x IPs
Nothing a tech can do about it and no we don't have the time to troubleshoot with your IT guy (sorry) -- I speak for myself, not my employer. |
