| Norton Internet Security 2013 I just updated my Norton Internet Security to the new 2013 edition and there are several changes which I'm not happy about. After reading the forums on the Symantec website it appears nobody likes these changes.
The first frustrating change is with the security vault. Unless you're upgrading from an older version you do not have an option to have the vault stored locally, it can only reside on the Symantec cloud. I for one don't trust storing anything were I don't have control over it especially after some of the recent problems in that field.
The second issue is the Norton Toolbar. It's gotten huge! It takes up three times the space of the old one and includes junk such as a share button to share things to Facebook. I wouldn't mind it except you can't remove things from the toolbar, you're stuck with the default. If I pay for software I shouldn't be forced to have what I basically consider advertising for another product.
Looks like it's time to start looking at alternatives to Norton Internet Security! |

Agree on much preferring the local storage option and plan on staying with my NIS 2012 until they hopefully revert back to local storage after a slew of complaints are registered regarding the change. Assume you referring to the working copy we sign in to no longer being accessed locally and not just a local backup somewhere on the HD, right?
No comment on Norton adding the Facebook "feature" to the toolbar other than I've never had a Facebook account and never will. I'll be voicing my dissatisfaction directly to Symantec regarding their shilling of social media nonsense in a paid product. -- The maximum effective range of an excuse is ZERO meters! |

I'll be voicing my dissatisfaction directly to Symantec regarding their shilling of social media nonsense in a paid product. There's been an awful lot of discussion already showing dissatisfaction about these two changes on the Symantec forums and it doesn't appear that Symantec really cares about what the customers want! Kind of like Microsoft. |

 | From what I've been reading, most of the changes in 2013 are to get it fully compatible with Win8 which unfortunately included the GUI. There are no real functional improvements worth a crap in 2013. I'll stick with 2012 until there is something actually worth upgrading for...and no, I have no intension of EVER running Win8 (aka 'the next Vista' lol) |

 | reply to Msradell I don't think the interface of NIS 2013 is bad. All the controls are still there and this view can be pinned (see arrow on the left) so that the interface automatically switches to it when the Norton interface is opened. All the other settings are still accessed by using 'Settings'

The toolbar height looks about the same to me but more functions are included across its width (the Share options only open when the button is clicked). The toolbar can always be turned off altogether and the Identity Safe and the site safety ratings in search results still work.

The inclusion of the Facebook function is just coming to terms with the fact that a lot of 'not very careful' people use Facebook. So much the better if a program can help prevent them from picking up malware and then possibly spreading it around.

As with other Security Suites, there are parts of NIS that might not be used by some. For instance, people might not use the the 'Safe Run' feature of Kaspersky but it's still there for those who want to use it. I think that's just the nature of Security Suites. This isn't to say that these unused functions necessarily affect the speed or performance of the product. No noticeable slowdown with NIS 2013.
I'm not keen on the cloud only storing of Passwords but then I use Lastpass on one or two of the installed browsers. Maybe not much different to that. |

heelyeahPremium join:2004-02-11 Raleigh, NC | reply to Msradell so if I update from 2012, I will still be able to store my ID safe data locally or not? |

1 edit | If you have it set up locally in 2012 before upgrading to 2013 then you will still be able to use it locally.
Before you upgrade, I suggest backing it up just in case something goes wrong now or in the future. How to do that »www-secure.symantec.com/norton-s···12_en_us
Thing is, if you need to reformat your computer, buy a new one, etc. to have it locally you will have to install 2012 and then upgrade to the latest after setting up Identity Safe again. |

 | reply to martg Nice post. Thanks.
I am currently using Comcast's Norton Security Suite and it still allows for the local storage of passwords. I am expecting that the next version release will probably also move password storage to the cloud.
I use Google Chrome and my passwords are already stored in the cloud by Chrome so I guess I can't complain if Norton does it too. I do find it very handy to change a password in Chrome on one PC and have it propagate through the cloud to all my other Chrome installations. |

DustynPremium join:2003-02-26 Ontario, CAN kudos:10 | reply to Msradell For the time being, I will be sticking with the latest previous version of NIS 2012. After monitoring the Symantec forums it appears there are bugs that require attention. Doesn't appear to be a polished product at this time. I'll wait for a couple more updates to NIS 2013 before deploying it on Windows 7 64-bit. »community.norton.com/t5/Norton-I···feedback -- Remember that cool hidden "Graffiti Wall" here on BBR?
