Every now and then I check.....

A couple years ago, I went from 2Ghz to 5Ghz for wireless at home, because Neighbors kept adding wireless routers on channels without looking. It was like every few days I'd move, then they would move. The moment I went to 5Ghz problems stopped.

Since then, Every now and then I'll do a scan to see where everyone else is...

Looked today... I'm still the only 5Ghz signal, but today took the cake: EVERYONE (but me) is now on channel 6!! All 8 of the routers on 2Ghz are on channel 6.

Half of them have no security either!

There are 18 stations in range here (other than my dual band device), all on 2.4Ghz. I'm the only one running a 5Ghz transceiver.

They're spread out better than in your case. I see:

ch1: 3
ch2: 1
ch4: 1
ch5: 1
ch6: 4
ch8: 1
ch9: 2
ch11: 5

I see 2 stations running no security, 8 running WEP, 2 running WPA and 6 running WPA2.

On a Netgear R6300 router, I noticed it has an auto setting for its channel. It seems to work to automatically change?

They must be daisy-chaining!

It’s sad, but (too) manufactures tend to use channel 6 as the default (along with minimum security if any). With a small addition of code they could have had the router scan the spectrum and select an unused channel (ideal one with the lease amount of interference). Signal strength is another beef, too many manufactures and users crank up the power to overcome connection issues.

Current inSSIDer scan
FWIW only one local wireless network here is showing as OPEN. The WEP network is the builders model home across the street. The rest seem to have gotten the message as far as using WPA2 is concerned. Of course I can't speak to the strength of their encryption keys...

I don't know if any of my "secured" WAPs are still using WEP though. I need to find a NetStumbler/Insidder replacement for old Mac OS X 10.5.8 to check. Does anyone know of one?

Most are on Channel 6 because that tends to be the default. I doubt anyone even knows what the channels mean.

We should be happy people even figure out to use security.

I will note I have seen improvement since I went to a disused channel or well I think its disused. My current router does not do 5ghz afaik, and we have devices here that cannot do it so no point.
