batteries: + & - but what are other connections for?

on batteries you have a + and a - (and when charging them - only those two are used)

but still they have one or two or more other connections - what are they for?

say particularly in our camera batteries have 3 or so connections

what's the other one for?

it is important - as I'm making a hack where I connect a battery externally - and just curious what the middle connection is for ...

thank you...

My understanding is that the extra contact(s) monitor charging temperature and/or charging current.

The extra contact supplies battery power level info to the camera. Some Nikon bodies will only work with batteries that have the "e" designation. These batteries have an extra chip built into them for more accurate communication.

The "e" designated batteries are backward compatible with older bodies. For example I can use the EN-EL3e from my D200 in my D70 but not the other way around.
