reply to inGearX The extra contact supplies battery power level info to the camera. Some Nikon bodies will only work with batteries that have the "e" designation. These batteries have an extra chip built into them for more accurate communication.
The "e" designated batteries are backward compatible with older bodies. For example I can use the EN-EL3e from my D200 in my D70 but not the other way around.
