1 edit | [Speed] Tiers and their "advertised" speeds Can anyone help me find info that tells me the tiers of Comcast and their Up/Down speeds? I've been out of touch with Comcast's upgrades, if there was any. My speed tests tells me that there must of been one since I'm on Silver tier and getting the speeds below. Wow.. 24 meg is fast and low 11ms ping and I get 3 out of 5 stars on the test.. I'm feeling left behind..

Silver (a.k.a Performance) is set to 15/2 in Chicago.
Try using ShaperProbe to test your speeds, it will give you a better idea of what your actual provisioned rates are:

You need to look at the whole test result (I'd run it 2-4 times (you'll get a diffenrt server each time), with nothing else running to see typical results)
like so.

the estimated capacity is the powerboost
the shaped rate is your true continious speed
and the burst size is how long/how much you get powerboosted .
this is according to this test, real world should be similar. |

24/4 on basic speed tests is what I get with Performance in the Chicago area. ShaperProbe shows 16/2 once PB settles down. |

That is because Comcast marketing doesn't want the real speeds to be known; they prefer to include "with PowerBoost" because they assume that most people won't know the difference. That and because every area has different definitions of each speed tier, Comcast doesn't want any particular area's speeds to be widely advertised to areas that might only have slower speeds.
The exception is that the 50mbps and higher downstream tiers generally don't include PowerBoost (in either the advertising or on the network).

I've had Power Boost on my 50 service since it was first offered in the Chicago area. Nowadays I burst to 67/17 or higher. On sustained throughput tests/graphs you can see a sharp drop-off after a few seconds. |
