[Line Problem] AT&T now says they'll call if they can install U-

After going back and forth quite a bit, we finally decided we want U-Verse, wasted bunch of time doing pre-wiring in our house, and called to order U-Verse.

We looked at ordering U-Verse in the past, like a year ago, but we weren't in the availability database. So, AT&T sent out an engineer who said that it was available at our house.

Very frustrating that after we placed our order, set a date for install, put in for time off work so we could be there when it's installed, now AT&T has called back and said there are problems with the wires coming to our house and they'll call if they can fix them and install U-Verse...

Is there anything we can do to encourage AT&T to fix whatever's wrong or are we pretty much at the whim of AT&T as to whether or not they fix it?

You are at their whim. In reality, if there is enough capacity at the VRAD and you are not at the outer limits of service for the copper portion, they will find a way to get you service if your immediate neighbors are getting Uverse or qualify for Uverse service. I have read stories of them running new copper to get service to a house if the wire distance to the VRAD is reasonable. Sometimes the old twisted copper pairs are just too degraded to use and they run new wires. The cost factor depends on if the wires are easily accessible, like some outdoor exposed, or not so accessible, like some buried.

I would wait one week from the original installation date and then call them back about the work order to fix the wires. If they do not have a definitive answer after a total of 4 weeks, and 4 phone calls, one per week, I would post in the Direct Forum at »AT&T Direct.

Sounds as if you made the correct decision in your other open thread on the same subject:

»AT&T said they'd call if they could complete our order....

Now, besides being completely ticked off they told me it would be fine at this house, only later to say "wait, there's a problem.." (thank god I didn't do all that wiring, can you imagine?)...

And yes, you are at the mercy/whim of AT&T as to whether/when they actually try to connect you to U-verse since U-verse is not a regulated service (and AT&T made sure by buying state legislators that they would not be required to get a local franchise contract in most locations as well).

Wow, great detective work Netfixer... This is what happened, I was going to wire the whole house. I started doing this, and ran a couple of lines before realizing I was already spending too much time I did not have. I would have had to taken time off work to finish and that would not have been a good idea. Thank you for going through my old posts though to try to find where I've contradicted myself. I haven't posted here much, but it's nice to know I have fans.

@david - Thanks for the info. I called into AT&T like you said to bug them. The first guy who answered the phone sounded nervous and shaky, don't know what was wrong with him. Then I got a manager who said he had to call 3 different people to find out what's going on with my order. He said he didn't have the technical knowledge to completely understand the notes, but it's something about needing another bonded pair in the facility... Whatever that means. We should hear back by Oct. 10. Thanks for the advice.

I seldom reply to anyone's post until I check their posting history. I have been doing tech support long enough to know that what a customer tells you happened is not always what really happened (although short/selective memory will have that customer remembering that it happened).

Got rid of att pots/dsl last month.
I am no longer an att customer.
Now saving over $40/month.
I did it, you should too.

Not sure if that advice was intended for me or for the OP (you replied to my post), but I did it in March, 2011.

Although I can't really say I am no longer an AT&T customer since they are still my cell phone service provider. Neither Sprint or T-Mobile have coverage as good as AT&T's in this area, and switching from AT&T to Verizon would be the classic leap from the frying pan into the fire.
