[Info] PPPoE DSL on Cisco 887 1500 MTU but not?

Iv had to reconfigure my DSL connection on my 887 to PPPoE from PPPoA.

One thing I was expecting to have to do was set my MTU down to 1492 and MSS 1464.

But after changing to PPPoE and before I added the MTU and MSS lines to my config I tried a ping google.com -f -l 1472 for the heck of it and was surprised.

Now I'm wondering how that was possible.

I tried browsing the web but it acted just like the expected MTU issues with pages failing to load.

So how is ICMP MTU 1500 and everything else apparently 1492?

That is ... odd.

Perhaps some packet captures might help work out whats really going on.

The windows "ping" will fragment packets.

Yup, you have to use the "-f" flag so that it doesn't fragment.

 sorry, I assumed it wasn't, based on the post I replied to. Sorry about that.
