Nice. My guess is just a lens flare in PS or what have you.

I did this in GIMP. Using filters click light and shadows, then supernova, and from there it is all trial and error.

Thanks for the info.

I haven't used GIMP in a while; I'll have to check if I have the current version. I was trying to see if I could duplicate what you did with one of the plug-ins I have in PS, but that one wouldn't add multiple flares to a single layer, and I just didn't have the patience to try to work around it.

You can do something similar with Topaz Star Effects. There are many settings to tweak the individual effects. This was a quick and dirty one I threw together.
