[IE] Crash when try to add page to favorites

IE9
Just as it says...when I try to add a site to my favorites the browser crashes instantly. I can add a site to the favorites by putting a shortcut on the desktop and moving it to the folder.
Any ideas?

Can you open the Action Center on the taskbar > Maintenance > View reliability history > View all problem reports

Can you right-click on a few of the "Internet Explorer" "Stopped working" errors > View technical details

What are the details of the errors?

Since Firefox references the plugin-container.exe the problem may be related to Flash.

Can you temporarily disable Flash in IE and see if it makes a difference:

IE > Tools > Manage add-ons > click on "Shockwave Flash Object" > Disable > Close

Restart IE.

When you have a chance can you try the following and see if it makes a difference?:

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > remove the checkmark in front of "Enable third party browser extensions" > OK then restart IE.

If that does not help you can re-enable third party browser extensions.

Re: [IE] Crash when try to add page to favorites

It wouldn't hurt to run sfc /scannow repair option.

»www.sevenforums.com/tuto ··· ker.html

After that make sure everything is up to date, e.g. Java, Flash, etc.

Re: [IE] Crash when try to add page to favorites

It may help to get more information on the IE crash by examining a user mode dump file of the crash.

Unfortunately the creation of user mode dump files is not enabled by default.

You can configure Windows to create user-mode dumps. Create a System Restore Point first.

If you copy and paste the following in Notepad and save as a .reg file, then right-click the .reg file and select "Merge" to add to the registry, a .dmp file at the time iexplore.exe crashes should be created in the C:\CrashDumps folder:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\iexplore.exe]
"DumpFolder"=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,43,00,72,00,61,00,73,00,68,00,44,00,75,\
00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00

After Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) crashes, can you then attach the .dmp file from the crash to a post in this thread.

More info on collecting user-mode dumps:

I had trouble.
Years ago when I had trouble I uninstalled IE and restored from the MS site. What about this idea.

I tried again adding the title (Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00) You highlighted. I have not looked at the registry in years.

Fellows I made some progress today. I went to the Microsoft support site and run the Fix it app and now IE9 will add a favorite but Firefox does not.

The trouble with this is I am almost aways using Ff.
Enough for a while I have other things to do and have spent too much time here now.

Open FF, go to Help, then Restart with add-ons disabled, then re-enable them one at a time. Check each one as you enable them for any conflicts.

Oops... Now IT is fixed only if I open IE9 in "Run as Administrator" and in that mode I have lost all my favorites.

I tried that but it disables PlainOldFavorites and I haven't added an extension in years.

The idea is to find out if an add-on is causing the conflict. Did you try restarting with add-ons disabled and re-enabling one at a time?

FYI: You don't need an add-on to import bookmarks. Open FF, Bookmarks, scroll down to Unsorted Bookmarks at the bottom, click it, then click, Import and Backups in the toolbar, choose an option.

Yes, I have it set to auto update but had to get the MS Silverlight updated. All others were ok.

I went through this again and it crashes with all add-ons disabled. this time I disabled them manually. I know that doing so does not make sense but I am scratching the bottom of my barrow.

Try this...

If Firefox crashes when attempting to select a file or folder location, such as when backing up bookmarks, browsing to a file to upload it, or choosing a location to save a file, this can occur if you have selected "Automatically expand to current folder" in your Windows Folder Options (applies to Windows 7). To resolve the problem, go to the Windows Start menu, click on "Computer" and in the window that opens, click on "Organize -> Folder and search options" and uncheck "Automatically expand to current folder" in the Folder Options "General" tab.

Also, can you get more information on the crashes involving Firefox - see the info under "Get help fixing this crash" (Get the Report ID of your latest crash report) in the following link:

»support.mozilla.org/en-U ··· is-crash

Since you have submitted information on the crashes to Mozilla you should be able to look at the information and see if a third party module is involved in the crashes using about:crashes from the address bar and generating the report.

auggy: I looked at the link you provided this morning. I have another doctor appointment This morning so I will be back later.
I am thinking that the problem is with IE9. Fx crashes when I try to add to the favorites in both Fx And IE. I am usng PlainOldFavorites.

Yesterday I learned That if I go to "Start; All Programs; Internet Explorer" and right click on it and "Run as Administrator" IE will open as if it was opened for the first time with only the original Favorites listed and I can add to my favorites. But of course as soon as I close this IE and open another one with the normal shortcut I still have a problem.

Be back after I see the doctor.

Oh, Thanks to all for the help. I am slowly learning.

A couple things that have been on my mind before we leave.

A while back I opened two Windows Explorer windows and copied my Favorites from my usual User Profile to my guest profile so as to have them when the house is full of kids and grandkids, Could this have messed things up? I expect that there may be a better way to do this.

Also I tried to make a registry change as instructed above and failed. this appealed to me and frustrated me that I could not do so. I would love to see where things went wrong here.

»Re: [IE] Crash when try to add page to favorites

When I get back I am going to go to the top of the thread and try everything again again. I did not get very far last time.
