I did this in GIMP. Using filters click light and shadows, then supernova, and from there it is all trial and error. |

I haven't used GIMP in a while; I'll have to check if I have the current version. I was trying to see if I could duplicate what you did with one of the plug-ins I have in PS, but that one wouldn't add multiple flares to a single layer, and I just didn't have the patience to try to work around it.

| You can do something similar with Topaz Star Effects. There are many settings to tweak the individual effects. This was a quick and dirty one I threw together.
