i need a new video card

my gts 450 is not cutting it with guild wars 2. i am willing to spend about $150 on a new one. i was either thinking of getting the radeon hd 6870 or the 7770. i found a 2gb overclocked edition of the 7770 on amazon for the price i am willing to pay. any other recommendations?

Newegg has the 7770 with a free game included, worth a check.

I don't think the 7770 will be much of an upgrade for GW2. I'd go for the 560 Ti.

7770 CF outperforms

Two 7770s will run you $225-$250.

A GTX 570 is almost guaranteed to be faster than 7770 CF and runs in the same price-range. Then you have issues with AMD drivers, Crossfire implementation, Crossfire support from games, and the benefit of a second card (which runs anywhere from 20-90% of the original card's power depending on game.

At 100% efficiency, two 7770s would theoretically provide a Passmark score of 4,116. Now IRL you will never see that. Even at ultra-high resolutions (1440p and 1600p), I have not seen Crossfired cards get more than 92% efficiency, which is ~3950.

You could probably expect a 40-60% boost (middle fifth) in most games under most conditions, which means a range of 2880 - 3292.

Lack of Crossfire support in some games (I know WoW didn't support it for a while) means the second card is dead weight.

By contrast, a GTX 570 provides a score of 3,624, which will not change depending on game.

tl;dr for the same money, buy a single card solution.

Kris - nice analysis - and why I'm doing a fanless build with two (not yet released);

»www.tomshardware.com/news/sapphi ··· 927.html

Last week 7770 GPUs got an official $110 reference card price, so hopefully these fancy sinks will keep each card under $150. so for around the same $300 I could get one 7950/7970 but passmark total of two 7770 would match that, for a whole lot less total wattage, which is important because my fanless PSU maxes out at 460 watts.

What case do you have? Is it important you stay fanless?

I just find a fanless low watt PC to be an interesting challenge - besides electricity in NYC costs a fortune - LOL

I paid $20 shipped for this case last week; »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ··· 11146075

I can later resell all the fanless components on ebaY, then make this same case house an air cooled OC'd build.

I understand if it's a personal challenge, sounds like a lot of fun. For real world performance, a single 7870/7950 would be a better option (if that's the only thing you're considering).

What CPU/cooler are you going to be running?

I don't know about the OP but I'm still saving up for a under $200 2GB 7850, as it's the most bang for the buck off a single 6-pin PCIe PSU connector since my new PC is only 420w and I don't want to push my luck (and yes I calculated the load exactly). I gave up on the whole silent PC build for the time being (for various reasons) so I'm no longer waiting for that fanless 7770. I hope to pull the trigger by Thanksgiving weekend.

It's a couple bucks cheaper on Newegg / you don't have to buy it via a third-party reseller and you get a free game coupon: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ··· 14121642

a good choice, but seeing as 7850's are going for $180 now, I think I'll hold off on a little more power and wattage for nearly the same money. a 7850 will give you on average 6-8 extra frames per second over a 7770.
