[RI] Random Slowdowns & Disconnects

Hi,

I'm in Tiverton, RI and have been experiencing random Internet slowdown and disconnects recently. I am using the same hardware that I was using at my prior address in Middletown, RI -- and I used to have no problems getting full speed there.

I have the Premier Internet package and HDTV. I do not see problems with the HDTV when I encounter Internet slowdowns and/or disconnects. My townhouse has separate wiring (provided in-unit) in the living room, office, and master bedroom for cable. The HDTV is in the living room and the cable modem is located in the office.

Here's the following router information. I'm intermittently getting between 4-10 Mbps down this evening. Speed tests are being run through speedtest.net using the closest server.

Hmmm.. I was just installing a new game that had to download 4.5 Gigs of data and I noticed all the lights on my modem would go off except for the Power and the DS (or the DS just came back on real quick). Everything would come back real quick and the installer kept going fairly quickly. This happened numerous times.

Once it had finished downloading, it quit doing this. Here's the stats from the game downloading:

Finished downloading 4,804,166,934 bytes in 1,501.529 seconds (3,199,516 bytes per second)

I looked in the modem's event log and saw nothing relating to this period of time. Also have an Arris modem.

Just did a speedtest:

Right now I'm uploading a 1.5 Gig file and I'm going to download it back to see if I can replicate this. This may be a completely different thing. Wonder if it's Power Boost kicking in and out. I'm also in Oklahoma City.

Might be time for both of you to look into a Docsis 3 modem/EMTA. That solved my slowdown issues. I used to have an Arris EMTA (have Cox phone). Just have them issue you D3 EMTA (I'm using a Cisco DPQ4212).

After manually verifying all my signal levels are well above tolerances based on literature on the web, I've decided to take your advice and purchase a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

I'll have the Motorola SB6121 SURFboard by friday. Ordered off Amazon with Prime Shipping.

I'll let you know if this solves my problem.

I've recently had some marked slowdowns during the day as well. My guess is Cox is doing some sort of infrastructure work in anticipation of their new speed levels.

I'm on Ultimate, but some afternoons recently speeds have dropped me into the high 20s/low 30s and then bounce back up. And yes, running a Cisco dpc3010.

But even with higher speeds, Cox needs to drop latency into Verizon type latency numbers or this long standing Cox customer is leaving too.

Following up after the installation/activation of my Motorola SURFboard SB6121 modem, I'm seeing improved line stability readings and dramatic improvements in upload/download speed.

Fastest reading from SpeedTest.net this morning shows...

32+ Mbps down / 12+ Mbps up

Very happy with the new modem, which I purchased new from Amazon for less than $90 USD.

Cheers!
