I'm sure Sweden's northern most part doesn't have a 21 person per square KM ratio. So why the hell are you counting Baffin Island in the reason why Vancouver and Toronto can't have quality Internet with low prices? I would even make a wager that Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal probably have a similar population than Stockholm.

Also, it doesn't matter that there are distances between major cities in Canada, all that means is they have to have some more fibre between cities. Sweden still has to have fibre between cities, ours is just a bit longer. In addition, it's not like communities with less than 5000 people are going to be served the same level Internet as people in a major centre. Oh, and no one's going to ensure they have the same service as the ISP's are actively trying to ditch any rules ensuring they even give them basic service. There were subsidies in the past but they are no more and shouldn't be involved in any discussion here.

Finally, the majority of Canadian population lives within 300 miles of the US border so please stop using stupid statistics like counting Baffin Island's population and geographic size.

As an FYI if you look back in the late 90's and early 2000's Canada was one of the leading nations with high speed Internet. Once the Telco's and Cable companies got the initial lines laid though they've just been sitting back and drinking up the cash profits.

InfernoSB posted : Just went to pay my bill and noticed the hike as well as usual from Shaw. Annoyed they didn't notify me of the rise in charge until I went to manually input the bill payment. From 2008-2012 BB25/X-Treme (which was the current top at the time) has only gone up about $16-18. If you view your payment history, they should've charged the extra $3 in Sept. as well but they didn't cause it shows $60 instead of $57. So yeah... price keeps rising, quality for me is above average with minor disconnects but to what end I wonder? How long will this increment keep going up till? I mean its not like we're getting any faster speeds.

Ah S.Korea... so want to be there...
tlhIngan posted : Yeah, don't sign the contract.

It's not like it's going to be a very GOOD laptop (it's an HP, after all), and given how expensive they are, if you really wanted it, the savings alone would probably pay for it.

Heck, Telus gives you a 500GB limit. On BB50 you get 400GB, and while Telus is slower, if you need the bandwidth and not the speed, it's probably a worthwhile tradeoff. (I don't need 50Mbps - 25Mbps is more than fast enough. However, having 500GB would be much better).

AJ102 posted : Yes, my bill has also gone up by $3. As you say, we don't even get the courtesy of a notice of rate increase any more. I'm on the old 7.5 mbps plan, which now shows as $55/month base rate (wow!!). They won't switch me to the newer 10 mbps plan without taking away my discount, and that faster plan is listed as only $50/month, so this is clearly an attempt to force existing customers to give up discounts.

I prefer Shaw to Telus, but maybe it's time to do the switch this year and get these ridiculous rates back under control. I feel like an idiot paying $50/month for the slowest service as an existing customer while Shaw is spraying $10/month offers all over the place for new customers. Time to be a new customer for somebody!

Hmmm. There was a Telus door-to-door salesman here last week and he left me a proposal:
- 15 mbps internet
- Optik TV basic
- no contract (month-to-month)
- free install, free WiFi router
- 3 PVRs
- free HP laptop as a gift

$40/month for the first 6 months, $78/month after

I'm paying Shaw over $100/month (albeit with more TV channels), and they aren't offering me any gifts to stay. And I can't help noticing that I could leave the Telus month-to-month plan and come back to Shaw in 6 months, and I'd be magically transformed into a privileged new customer.
