Driving From San Francisco to Monterey Bay

Hey guys,

I'm driving from San Francisco to Monterey next weekend with my girlfriend. We plan on driving there on highway 1.

This is the first time I'm going there and the first time driving on highway 1.

I plan on stopping at a few areas before ending up at Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Couple of questions:
1. What are some must stop areas along the way? I'm open to anything really!

2. Where should I visit in Monterey besides the aquarium?

3. Any good recommendations for hotels in Monterey?

I'd suggest the Monterey Movies Tour...if you have enough time. I know my family enjoyed it

The Whole Enchilada in Moss Landing, for their overall food. The Giant Artichoke in Castroville, for their deep fried artichoke hearts. They're so good with ranch! And for a Hotel that I would highly recommend, if you're aiming to impress and should experience at least once, Monterey Plaza Hotel.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, weather permitting.

Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing, order cioppino there, they beat Bobby Flay.
Old Fisherman's Grotto in Monterey.

It's a great drive, especially if the weather cooperates.

Your girlfriend will get to enjoy the magnificent scenery. You, on the other hand, best keep your eyes on the road. Trust me on this one.

Yea, weather might be an issue. Hopefully it'll all pan out. Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm still open to them.

If you get lost driving down Highway 1 and cannot find Monterey, please stop driving

LOL, or see San Simeon (Hearst Castle) you have gone too far.

Has anyone tried Peachwood's Steakhouse in Santa Cruz?

I second that. I've been on Hwy 1 years ago, and I'm sure it hasn't changed much. It's a two-way highway with many curves.

EDIT: Yes, I also recommend the Santa Cruz boardwalk. If you have time, get on the roller coaster. It's a blast.
