CPE for Hotspot/zoneI'm working with a property owner/manager and they're looking at deploying a hotspot/hotzone in their mobile home park.
They're looking at using a UBNT Bullet with an Omni anntena (actual antenna has not been selected yet) for the "pop". With that, what CPEs does everyone suggest in terms of getting the best coverage since regular wifi cards will not always work. Also what captive portals are being used?
Thanks!
PS- We have looked at hotspotsystem.com but they take too much control over your splash pages and such, even if they're getting paid. |

Low cost $49 UBNT Loco radios. Use a Mikrotik for portal. |
|
|
Mikrotik will handle the bill correct? such as via PayPal or just require the user to click "i agree", etc? |

Loco's for CPE and two NS2 (or NS5) for the APs. Alternately, the Flex system from ARC on 5 GHz to take advantage of the lower cost CPE (ARCFlexUSB at $39) » www.doubleradius.com/Pro ··· -AF-FU-5OR, the FreeStation5: » www.doubleradius.com/Pro ··· -AF-FS-5Looks like there are a number of solutions for that park. Where will the APs be located in the park? |

I would go with unifi outdoor setup its just a rocket but its loaded with unifi software on it and you can hook up the Ubnt omni on it from what I was told by Matt Hardy. » streakwave.com/Itemdesc. ··· tdoor-US» streakwave.com/Itemdesc. ··· AMO-2G10 |

UniFi requires that a computer run the controller software for the hotspot function.
A standalone system might be better... |
|
|
We prefer that the software be standalone or hosted. |

The Pop/equipment would be hosted in a trailer that is no longer used and belongs to the property owner, so it will be secure. a small TV tower is also available if needed- approx. 48feet in the air since the train is flat and not many trees. |

I like the USB CPE but wish it was Cat5 |

More questions...
- What other broadband service options are available right now to the park residents?
- What is the reasoning behind the park wanting to provide this service?
- Who will be the upstream provider?
- How much bandwidth is available?
- Have you considered using CSMA/CD only or is it possible to use a TDMA system? |
|
|
-TWC if it works. Its an older system with lots of issues. ATT is available to about 15 people out of the park and this area will never be upgraded to U-Verse or anything else
-No other service really available
-Megapath will be the upstream provider
-Bandwidth that will be purchased is set to be considered, at minm of 3/3 will be ordered though.
-CSMA/CD??? TDMA??- UNBT TDMA?? |

Do you want to use a proprietary system like AirMAX or FlexTDMA or straight 802.11b/g/a/n?
If you use the proprietary system, you gain performance but lock out laptops and such.
If it was me, I'd use the proprietary system and user CPE on 5GHz. You're fighting the "tin cans" (mobile homes) anyway so CPE is almost a necessity.
Don't forget to make provisions to squelch the p2p and such...Netflix and YouTube will still be an issue. Make sure you can be provisioned for more bandwidth if/when you need it. |
|
|
Using a propreitary or "open" system doesn't matter. If i could, i would prefer both but I know its most likely not possible.
NetFlix, and Youtube will be throttled down, and P2P and alike will not be tollerated. If it becomes an issue, I've considered taking SuperDogs approch and removing the customer. |

Do you have any advise on hosted portal solutions? |

This is good for a standalone solution: » www.guest-internet.com/g ··· heet.pdfAbout a one-time fee of $245 or so...supports 100 concurrent users. Offsite hosted portals can be done with Sputnik: » sputnik.net/About $20 per AP per month...which drives me back to the solution listed above. Others folks might know of other solutions. |

I know of more than 1 camping grounds that are using DNS Redirector (software that runs on a local server) to do the captive portal. The pages are entirely open-source and hosted by IIS or Apache on the same server (or hosted)
One had a menu with the following options which I thought were cool... a) get on the Internet for the rest of the day, pay $1 via paypal b) get pool pass, pay $4 via paypal (when you paid it sent you to a page with a bar-code on it, told you to bookmark it, then present it to the guard when you get to the pool house, who then scanned it c) get pumpout service, don't remember how much or what this was for, I think it had something to do with RVs d) submit problem report; this had options like dirty campsite, food left out, road obstruction, etc. basically for complaining/reporting slobs - presumably this sent an email to some guys with a truck, garbage bags, bear intimidation system, etc.
Options B through D worked even if you didn't buy Internet but it let you go to Paypal and their own website and some neighboring businesses. |

Any idea on the software? |
