Re: [Cable] Faster Cable tiers?

said by eeeaddict:

I don't think they wil get any higher speed even on the apoi (except maybe 32/7) this is because 1gigabit from rogers to teksavvy is a few THOUSAND dollars, imagine if 10 customers max out their connection for a while that would totally use up the link and would cost TS way more than those 10 people would pay them.

untrue. there's always the economics of running the service. They can always offer the service but at what price that will be profitable and attractive.

the 150/10 isn't for your average home users. You're looking at $122+ per month. Moreover, i believe rogers will have to keep tabs on how much these users download.

With APOI the links could be a lot cheaper to install since everything is centralized.

that is true that they can charge more but tbh anything less than a few hundered dollars a month would probably be risky/unprofitable (seeing as most likely anyone willing to pay for that speed will probably use a lot more bandwith) also even with the aopi its still rediculously expensive for a gigabit link several thousand a month actually add that the the cost rogers charges for the subscribers link to rogers (the actual cable line) and all the other various tipa fees and you will either have to oversubscribe like crazy or you'd have to have caps on something so fast

From what's been posted here I believe that even with 28/1 TekSavvy needs about 1Mb/s per user. The oversubscription ratios are quite good. A 100Mb/s+ plan might not be available in unlimited, but there's no reason they couldn't do 300GB and 800GB options.

he brought up a good point. No everyone is maxing their connection at all times. you have balance between light users and heavy users. The end point you need to look for is peak congestion.

they could offer 100meg tiers and 5 are lighter users and 5 are heavy users. the average load would be the same as if they are regular users.

it's true that if there's an uneven ratio of super heavy users that cogs up the network it'll cost more money to maintain with upgrades and links. In the end, TSI will charge everyone more. They can still offer it but it depends on how much and what are people willing to pay.

Once people decide it's too expensive AND TSI starts losing money on the service, that's when TSI cannot offer the service.

Rogers speeds have fallen behind almost all third world countries. 150/10 is still a joke but at least it will start to close the 20 year gap Canada is behind the rest of the world.

If TSI ever finds things getting rough in the dollars for bandwidth department they should run a "get your grandma*" switched over to teksavvy. Other than the whole she was too old for the year field fiasco (that thread got lost with the site crash... for those who were wondering I was posting in good humour as a friendly poke towards the TSI guys. Humour / Melodrama gets lost on boards sometimes.) She's loved the internet and is likely using under 5 GB a month.
