| [Speed] My French Car Forum is Being Throttled - But Why? I joined a forum six months ago, based in France, for lovers of old Citroen cars. Two days ago, the site has slowed to a crawl. Here it is: »autodejavel.fr I have tried the site from two ethernet-connected PCs on my home network, (Comcast cable Hi Speed) as well as via wifi - same problem - very slow download (like 60 seconds or longer). ALL other sites- even other French news sites like lemonde.fr, work at blazing speed.
But not autodejavel.fr ! The website's admin guys are not experiencing any delays or lagging in France.
Really Important: on my iPad 3 with ATT LTE, the site works lightning-fast, no problem whatsoever. The website autodejavel.fr is never a busy site- maybe 20 active posters online - and has always been instantly responsive. Can anyone please try the site and let me know? Thanks, Peter
I use IE 9 and Speedtest.net shows about 24Mb download speeds. Thanks very much! |

kudos:2 | I'm on Comcast as well (have the performance w/powerboost package). I usually get 24 MB down and 4 MB up on speedtests.
I clicked on your link almost 10 minutes ago, and the page still has yet to load for me. It has not timed out yet, just still trying to load.
I wonder if its a routing issue? I know ping tests don't say much, but look at the time it takes. Seems high to me.

Comcast doesn't throttle. The problem is probably due to the unique French engineering, similar to that which went into their fine automobiles such as Simca, Alpine, Peugot, Renault, and Citroen. Considering, you're lucky you can get to the site at all.  |

I am on a Comcast 12/2 connection. I clicked on your link and the site loaded in about 4 seconds. Certainly not the fastest loading homepage I have seen, but considering that it is probably a low budget site and had to travel across the Atlantic to Middle Tennessee, I would not consider it to be "throttled". Try going to some of the Taiwan computer parts sites if you want to really see slow load times.
If you are still having problems, then the problem is probably in the routing between you and the site. Try doing some traceroutes to see what the differences are between your connection and mine.

Hi Brian- and thanks for trying the site. Comcast is definitely doing something here.
Again, the site loads super-fast on my iPad 3 with ATT LTE cellular connection... but is almost dead with Comcast. I wasted 40 minutes talking to four Comcast "support" people, three of whom tried to sell me the Signature Plan for 79.95 and $20. per month. I refused, and they could not offer anyone to help me out for "free." I'm at my wit's end! |

Comcast isn't throttling this site. It could be due more to routing from the various networks. My first recommendation is to register as a user here so I and others can PM you. The second is to post a traceroute from the ATT network and then immediately (same time of day) post a traceroute from the Comcast network.
I'd hold the French car thing against you except that the DS is pretty neat and I'm wrenching on an old British car tonight with friends, so I really shouldn't cast aspersions on other cars since the Brits haven't historically been known for their reliability.

Third party test shows 3-5 second page load time. I can only assume they don't use comcast
*all* their US sites show somewhat bad performance.

So, the site may have lots of crap on it (which isn't loaded on a mobile browser like your iPad3) which slows it to a crawl.
On comcast, my linux box, firefox with noscript blocking all the crap, page loads in about 1.5 seconds. Even allowing scripts it seems to load in under 2 seconds.

For what its worth, I did try the page this morning, and now it loads in under 5 seconds. Did not actually time it, but it is way faster then it was last night. When I posted my reply at 21:04:43, I waited at least 15 minutes for the page to load before I gave up.
So, something was going on last night in regards to the path the bits were taking to get from me on Comcast's network to them.
It appears that whatever was "broke" is now fixed (as far as the actual load time of the page). I did not try to "download" anything from the actual page (like a file posted in a thread) so I cannot say if that is working any faster then it was before. If the OP has a link to such a file download, post it and lets test that out as well.

Sounds like evening congestion. How is your speed on domestic sites? Comcast jumps through lots of hoops to reach internationally hosted sites so congestion along the route is a problem.
It's acting slow for me right now so that is what i suspect. |
